Chapter 7 - Nora's Last PromiseMiriam brought Grant an old letter written by Nora.

Before her death, Nora had placed thirty percent of the company into a trust for Ella.
Bellwether Commons had been her dream project: affordable housing, gardens and a community center.
She had also insisted that no major sale could happen without independent approval.
Grant began to realize Nora had designed the trust partly because she feared what might happen when powerful people stopped being questioned.
Upstairs, Ella found one of her mother's bracelets.
Celeste caught her holding it.
She reminded the four-year-old that Grant had already sent Rosa and Maya away.
Then she whispered:
“If you tell Daddy stories about me, he might send you away too.”
Grant entered before hearing the beginning of the conversation.
He saw Ella trembling.
Later he noticed faint marks where the vest straps had pressed unusually hard against her shoulders.
When he asked what happened at the pool, Ella whispered:
“Celeste did something to my orange jacket.”

Then she looked toward the door.
“Daddy, don't tell her I told you.”
