Chapter 1 - Three Holes in the Orange VestThe first person to sense something was wrong was ROSA DELGADO, one of the two housekeepers working at the enormous Whitmore mansion in Westchester County.

Four-year-old ELLA WHITMORE was sitting beside the turquoise swimming pool, playing with plastic toys while her stepmother, CELESTE WHITMORE, stood several yards away holding a bright orange inflatable life vest.
Celeste looked left.
Then right.
Only after confirming nobody appeared to be watching did she remove a thin needle from her purse.
One puncture.
She withdrew it.
A second puncture.
Then a third.
Exactly three tiny holes disappeared into the shiny orange PVC.
Celeste hid the needle and approached Ella with the sweetness everyone in the mansion had learned to associate with her public face.
“Come swim with me, sweetheart.”
Ella shook her head.
“Mom said I'm not allowed to play in the water. It's dangerous.”
The reference to her dead mother irritated Celeste, although her smile never disappeared.
“You have a life vest. Don't worry.”
A few minutes later Celeste and Ella entered the pool together.
From the far side of the patio, Rosa exchanged a look with another housekeeper, MAYA COLLINS.
Something felt wrong.
Rosa quietly moved behind a column and began recording Celeste and Ella in the water.
Maya pulled out her own phone.
She typed:
“SIR, COME HOME NOW! SHE'S TRYING TO DROWN THE LITTLE GIRL!”
Then she pressed SEND.

Neither woman understood yet that those few seconds would eventually expose something much bigger than an attempt to harm a child.
They would expose a marriage built on lies, forged signatures, stolen money and a conspiracy that had begun years earlier.
