Chapter 1 - The Only Way OutVanessa waited until the patio doors closed behind the housekeeper.

The afternoon sun burned white across the water, turning the surface of the rectangular pool into a sheet of shattered glass. Beyond it stood the Mercer mansion—limestone walls, towering windows, immaculate gardens, and enough quiet wealth to make danger seem impossible.

Three-year-old Nora Mercer stood near the edge in her yellow swimsuit.

Her brown hair had been tied into two little pigtails that morning.

“Milo swim?” she asked.

The family's Golden Retriever lay beneath an umbrella several yards away, his head resting on his paws.

Vanessa smiled.

“Not yet, sweetheart.”

Nora looked back at the water.

Vanessa looked toward the mansion.

No one.

She looked toward the garden.

Empty.

Then she stepped closer.

The push was quick.

Not dramatic.

Not angry.

That was what would haunt Daniel later.

Vanessa simply placed both hands against Nora's small back and shoved.

Nora lost her balance.

Her arms flew outward.

Then she disappeared over the edge.

The splash echoed across the stone deck.

Nora surfaced almost immediately, coughing and crying.

The pool water sat nearly twenty inches below the deck. The smooth vertical wall offered nothing her tiny fingers could grip.

Nora kicked frantically.

“Vanessa!”

Her stepmother approached the edge.

For one hopeful second, Nora reached upward.

Vanessa bent down.

Her expression was calm.

“Rest in peace.”

Nora stared at her.

Then Vanessa smiled.

It was not the warm smile she wore when Daniel was watching.

It was small.

Private.

Satisfied.

Vanessa turned and walked toward the removable metal ladder on the near-right side.

Nora screamed.

Vanessa lifted the ladder from its mounts.

Metal scraped against stone.

She carried it behind the pool house.

Then she disappeared into the mansion.

Milo began barking.

Nora cried until her throat hurt.

Some time later, Milo jumped into the pool.

The dog swam to her.

Nora wrapped both arms around his shoulders.

The daylight faded.

Inside the mansion, Vanessa moved carefully through the rooms, waiting for Daniel to return from a meeting.

When he did, she allowed nearly twenty minutes to pass.

Then she began pretending to search.

“Nora?”

Daniel looked up from his phone.

“Nora?”

Vanessa appeared at the foot of the staircase.

“She isn't upstairs.”

Daniel's face changed immediately.

“What do you mean?”

“I thought she was with you.”

“I just got home.”

They checked the playroom.

The kitchen.

The guest rooms.

The terrace.

By the time they reached the patio doors, Vanessa was moving quickly enough to appear frightened.

“I don't know where she is either!”

They hurried toward the pool.

Then Daniel stopped.

A sound had reached him.

Crying.

Faint.

Broken.

“Daddy!”

Daniel's face drained of color.

He ran.

When he reached the pool, the sight nearly stopped his heart.

Nora was in the water below the deck, sobbing, both arms wrapped around Milo.

“Oh my God!”

Daniel jumped in fully dressed.

He hit the water hard and swam toward her.

“Nora!”

She reached for him only when his arms were around her.

“I've got you.”

Milo released a tired whine.

Daniel carried Nora toward the wall, lifted her as high as he could and pulled himself up after her.

On the deck, he wrapped Nora in his jacket.

She shook violently.

Vanessa stood several feet away.

Her hand covered her mouth.

But Daniel saw something in her eyes.

Not relief.

Disbelief.

Nora buried her face against Daniel's chest.

Then slowly, she turned.

Her tiny finger lifted.

It pointed directly toward Vanessa.

“Daddy…”

Daniel lowered his face toward hers.

“What happened?”

Nora kept her eyes on him.

“She pushed me.”

Silence swallowed the entire yard.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Daniel's head turned.

For the first time since marrying her eighteen months earlier, he looked at Vanessa and saw someone he did not recognize.

“What did she say?” Vanessa whispered.

Daniel rose without answering.

His jaw tightened.

Behind Vanessa, two empty ladder mounts gleamed beside the pool.

Daniel stared at them.

Then at her.

“Where's the ladder?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel's anger changed into something colder.

Because that was when he realized Nora had not simply fallen into the pool.

Someone had made sure she couldn't get out.

And his daughter had just told him who.
