Chapter 9 - An Apology That Wasn't EnoughSofia was repairing a broken kitchen chair when Daniel appeared outside her apartment.

Exactly one week after the pool incident.

She stood.

“What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to talk.”

“Your lawyers have Leah's number.”

“I know.”

“Then use it.”

Daniel stopped several feet away.

“I won't stay.”

Sofia folded her arms.

“That's comforting.”

He looked ashamed.

“You saved Emma.”

“Yes.”

“I know that now.”

“Congratulations.”

Daniel lowered his gaze.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I should have listened.”

“Yes.”

“I'm sorry.”

Sofia felt anger rise.

For seven days strangers had called her violent.

Her staffing agency suspended her.

A potential employer cancelled an interview.

People posted her address.

Now the man who slapped her stood outside expecting language to fix it.

“You know what I keep remembering?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Emma's arms around my neck.”

His face tightened.

“She was shaking.”

“I didn't know.”

“I told you I had rescued her.”

“I know.”

“You didn't even ask.”

Daniel had no defense.

Sofia stepped closer.

“You looked at your daughter, looked at me and decided the person in the uniform must have caused the problem.”

“You're right.”

“And then when I exposed your wife, half the internet decided I attacked a pregnant woman.”

“I issued a correction.”

“Not yet.”

Daniel removed a folded page.

“I wrote down what I did.”

She took it.

He acknowledged the slap.

His failure to witness the fall.

Sofia's rescue.

The fake belly.

No excuses.

“Why give me this?”

“Because you shouldn't have to prove something everyone watched.”

Sofia folded it.

“Thank you.”

Not forgiveness.

Something honest.

As Daniel turned away Sofia called:

“Why did Vanessa know my name before you introduced me at the party?”

He stopped.

“What?”

“When you hired me, I met her once. But at the pool, before you hit me, she said, ‘Sofia, don't touch her.’ She knew exactly where I was working that afternoon.”

“So?”

“She had changed my shift.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“I was supposed to work upstairs.”

Sofia continued.

“She moved me to the pool terrace that morning.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Then she added:

“But I think she knew I'd started asking about the pregnancy.”

Daniel drove away.

That evening he recorded a public statement.

He acknowledged Sofia rescued Emma.

He admitted striking her.

He said he had not witnessed Emma's fall.

He asked the public not to repeat the claim that Sofia stabbed a pregnant woman.

He stated Vanessa had not been pregnant at the time.

The correction received fewer views than the accusation.

But the conversation began changing.

Vanessa called.

“You humiliated me.”

“I told the truth.”

“You destroyed our privacy.”

“You faked a child.”

Silence.

Then Daniel asked:

“Why did you put Sofia at the pool?”

Vanessa said nothing.

He continued:

“Why did Halcyon have a document predicting a household safety crisis before the party?”

Another silence.

Then:

“Where did you see that?”

Daniel felt cold.

“You knew the document existed.”

Vanessa ended the call.

Three minutes later he received an anonymous message.

Your wife isn't the only person who altered the cameras.

Attached was a photograph of the security cabinet.
