Chapter 18 - The Woman Behind the BellyDaniel returned to Vanessa's hotel on July 26.

His attorneys advised against it.
Maya told him confrontation would not help.
But Daniel wanted one answer.
Vanessa opened the door.
She looked smaller without the prosthetic pregnancy.
No flowing maternity dress.
No hand resting protectively over an imaginary child.
“I need to ask one question.”
She stepped aside.
They sat.
“I assume you saw the video.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Then you've decided.”
“I've decided what I saw.”
Silence.
“Why did you trip Emma?”
Vanessa stared toward the window.
Then whispered:
“I thought Sofia would catch her.”
Daniel felt his breath stop.
“What?”
“I knew she was watching.”
“You deliberately made a three-year-old fall into a pool?”
“It was the shallow side.”
“Emma cannot swim.”
“Sofia was right there.”
Daniel stood.
“You gambled with my daughter.”
“I wasn't trying to hurt her.”
“That doesn't make it less dangerous.”
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“You don't understand.”
“Then tell me.”
She rose.
“Your father left a company buried in obligations.”
“That's why you stole from Emma?”
“I borrowed.”
“You faked a pregnancy.”
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel understood.
“Because of the amendment.”
Silence.
“You needed to appear pregnant to claim voting authority.”
“I needed enough control to close the sale.”
“And I kept refusing.”
“You refused reality.”
“So you created a crisis.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel felt sick.
“And Sofia?”
“She was asking questions.”
“So you put her at the pool.”
“I knew she'd help Emma.”
“And then you planned to blame her.”
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I thought if there was a household incident involving a careless new employee, you'd finally understand the estate and company were unstable.”
“You used my daughter.”
“I thought I could control it.”
Daniel stared.
“You didn't.”
“No.”
“Sofia did.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“What about the pregnancy?”
She covered her face.
“I was never pregnant.”
Daniel froze.
Not miscarriage.
Not grief.
Nothing.
“You lied from the first day.”
“Yes.”
“The ultrasound?”
“Purchased.”
“The doctor letters?”
“Altered.”
“The heartbeat recording?”
“Online.”
Daniel almost staggered.
Emma kissing the belly.
The nursery.
Names.
Baby clothes.
“Why?”
“Because the amendment required a pregnancy.”
“And the trust money?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“More than a million?”
She closed her eyes.
Daniel nodded.
“And Maya?”
“What?”
“The ninety thousand.”
“A bookkeeping problem.”
“Was it?”
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Maya was going to expose accounting issues.”
Daniel stared.
“So you blamed her.”
“She was already leaving you.”
“You helped destroy my marriage.”
“Your marriage was failing.”
Partly true.
That made it crueler.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Vanessa followed.
“Daniel, if you help me we can still protect the family.”
He stopped.
“The family isn't the company.”
“Don't leave.”
For a moment he saw the woman he had loved.
Then remembered Emma falling.
Sofia running.
The fake belly collapsing.
“I'm not lying for you.”
He left.
May you like
Behind him Vanessa sat on the hotel floor.
For the first time, there was no one left she could confidently control.
