Chapter 8 - The Trust Nobody QuestionedEmma's inheritance was supposed to be untouchable.

Samuel Harper established her trust shortly after her birth.
Cash.
Investments.
A fifteen-percent beneficial interest in Harper Leisure.
Independent review requirements.
Daniel had never questioned its administration.
Until Friday.
He sat across from trusts attorney Miriam Cole.
“The trust is separate,” she explained. “Emma's assets cannot simply be used for family expenses.”
“Owen manages the accounting.”
“Then he should produce records.”
“What about the continuity amendment?”
Miriam removed her glasses.
“Which copy?”
Daniel slid it forward.
The document stated that if Daniel's spouse was carrying another biological descendant, she could temporarily exercise voting authority over part of the family trust during certain restructuring decisions.
Miriam stared.
“I advised Samuel against language like this.”
“But he signed it.”
“I was not present for this execution.”
Daniel's pulse quickened.
“Could he have signed later?”
“Of course.”
“But?”
“I would like to see the original.”
That afternoon Daniel confronted Vanessa.
“I want every document connected to Emma's trust.”
Vanessa poured water.
“Why?”
“Because I'm her father.”
“Everything is managed.”
“Then records won't be a problem.”
Her face tightened.
“Is Maya behind this?”
“No.”
“It always comes back to Maya.”
Daniel had heard variations for years.
Maya is suspicious.
Maya resents our marriage.
Maya wants money.
Maya wants Emma to hate Vanessa.
He had repeated those ideas until eventually they helped destroy his first marriage.
“Vanessa, give me the records.”
She sat.
“Your father trusted the structure.”
“Then show me.”
“Be careful bringing outsiders into family business.”
Daniel stood.
“Did you fake being pregnant to activate that amendment?”
Her eyes filled.
“You think everything was about money?”
“I don't know what anything was about.”
He left.
That evening Maya dropped Emma off.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Are you still angry at Sofia?” Emma asked.
Daniel swallowed.
“No.”
“Say sorry.”
Maya looked away.
Daniel nodded.
“I need to.”
Later he told Maya about the trust amendment.
When he said North Quay, her expression changed.
“Say it again.”
“North Quay Advisory.”
Maya went to her car.
Returned with a file box.
Inside were records from a charity program she once managed through Harper Leisure.
Three years earlier, $90,000 disappeared.
The transaction carried Maya's credentials.
Vanessa had helped lead the internal review.
Daniel believed Maya had approved it.
It became one of the final wounds in their marriage.
Maya opened the file.
Recipient:
North Quay Services LLC.
Daniel stared.
“That was the money everyone said I took,” Maya whispered.

For the first time, Daniel wondered whether he had ended his marriage over a crime someone else committed.
And whether the woman he later married had helped make sure he blamed the wrong person.
