Chapter 5 - What Emma RememberedMaya found Emma sitting beneath the kitchen table drawing circles.

It was Tuesday morning.
The toddler liked hiding there.
She called it her house.
Maya sat on the floor nearby.
“What are you drawing?”
“Pool.”
Blue crayon covered half the page.
A small gray figure stood beside it.
A larger brown figure sat in a chair.
Emma drew one black line extending from the chair.
Maya felt a painful mixture of curiosity and dread.
“Want to tell me?”
Emma pointed.
“Me.”
Then:
“Sofia.”
Then the seated figure.
“Vanessa.”
Her finger moved to the long line.
“Foot.”
Maya stayed silent.
Emma continued.
“I run.”
She moved her finger.
“Hit foot.”
Then her hand dropped.
“Water.”
Maya's stomach tightened.
“What happened next?”
“Sofia come.”
“Did Vanessa come?”
Emma shook her head.
“Vanessa smile.”
Maya put one arm around her.
“You're not in trouble.”
Emma looked at her.
“Daddy mad.”
“Daddy was scared.”
“Sofia hurt.”
Maya closed her eyes.
Later she photographed the drawing and called Daniel.
“We need someone trained to talk with Emma.”
“For what?”
“Because she's describing Vanessa tripping her.”
Daniel sounded exhausted.
“She's three.”
“Yes. That's why we don't question her ourselves.”
“Vanessa says you've been putting ideas in her head.”
Maya shut her eyes.
“Do you believe that?”
Silence.
Maya continued:
“Daniel, she told me the same sequence without me naming Vanessa.”
“I don't know what to believe.”
“Then stop deciding before evidence.”
That sentence hurt him.
It sounded like something his father once said.
After the call, Daniel went to Samuel Harper's old office at the family company's headquarters.
He was searching for trust documents.
Instead he found Walter Keene.
Walter was seventy.
A former family-office controller who had worked with Samuel for three decades.
Daniel mentioned the trust amendment.
Walter's face tightened.
“You need to speak with Miriam Cole.”
“Why?”
“The amendment was controversial.”
“Vanessa says Dad approved it.”
Walter shook his head.
“Samuel refused an early version.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“Because it gave too much authority to a spouse based on the existence of an unborn beneficiary.”
“Then why is there a signed amendment?”
Walter looked genuinely saddened.
“That is what somebody should have asked years ago.”
He opened a filing cabinet.
Inside was an email.
URGENT — FAMILY CONTINUITY TRUST AMENDMENT.
Samuel's response:
Do not execute. Future grandchildren should never be used to bypass independent controls.
Daniel stared.
The email had been forwarded.
To Vanessa Harper.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
Hold for family review. Owen says financing requires flexibility.
Daniel looked up.
“What financing?”
May you like
Walter stared.
“You really don't know?”
