Chapter 2 - Six Seconds of VideoBy seven o'clock that evening, more than eighty thousand people had watched Daniel Harper slap Sofia Bennett.

By midnight, another video had passed half a million views.
Neither showed the truth.
The first clip began with Sofia holding a soaked Emma.
Daniel approached.
The slap.
Sofia's stunned expression.
End.
The second began several seconds later.
Sofia walked toward Vanessa.
Raised a needle.
Touched what appeared to be the stomach of a heavily pregnant Black woman.
Vanessa screamed.
The clip ended before the belly deflated.
The caption read:
MAID ATTACKS PREGNANT WOMAN AFTER CHILD FALLS INTO POOL.
A second account changed it.
HOUSEKEEPER SLAPS BACK BY STABBING EMPLOYER'S NINE-MONTH PREGNANT WIFE.
There had been no stabbing.
No injury.
No real pregnancy.
But a six-second clip did not need facts.
Sofia watched the video from the apartment she shared with her younger sister, Chloe.
Chloe was nineteen, studying nursing at community college.
She watched twice.
“They cut the part where it collapsed.”
“Yes.”
“They made it look like you stuck a needle into a pregnant woman.”
“Yes.”
“And people believe this?”
Sofia looked at the comments.
Thousands.
Monster.
Psychopath.
Arrest her.
Who attacks a pregnant woman?
“Apparently.”
At Hawthorne House, Daniel sat in the nursery that had been built for a baby who did not exist.
The walls were pale green.
A white crib stood beneath a window.
Tiny clothes filled drawers.
An ultrasound photograph sat framed on the dresser.
Daniel held it in both hands.
He had stared at that image dozens of times.
He had shown it to friends.
To his mother.
To Emma.
Now he did not know what he was looking at.
Vanessa sat across from him.
She had changed clothes.
Without the prosthetic, her body looked almost shockingly ordinary.
Daniel could barely look at her.
“How long?”
Vanessa cried.
“Daniel—”
“How long?”
She covered her face.
“I can explain.”
“How long have you not been pregnant?”
Her hands lowered.
“I was pregnant.”
Daniel stared.
Her voice trembled.
“At first.”
He looked at the ultrasound.
“What happened?”
“I lost the baby.”
“When?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Months ago.”
“And you kept pretending?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of losing everything.”
Daniel stood.
“You let me build a nursery.”
“I didn't know how to tell you.”
“You let Emma kiss your stomach every night.”
Vanessa began sobbing harder.
Daniel turned away.
The explanation was monstrous enough.
But at least it contained grief.
He wanted to believe grief could explain it.
Then Emma's biological mother arrived.
Maya Bennett entered the room without knocking.
She and Daniel had divorced two years earlier.
Their marriage had ended badly.
Vanessa had entered Daniel's life near the end of it.
Maya looked from Daniel to Vanessa.
Then at the flat maternity dress lying across the chair.
“What happened?”
Daniel explained.
Maya listened.
When he finished, she looked at Vanessa.
“Where did you receive prenatal care?”
Vanessa's expression changed.
“What?”
“You said you lost the pregnancy. Where?”
“My doctor.”
“Which doctor?”
“That is private.”
Maya stared.
“You spent seven months telling my daughter she was going to have a brother.”
Vanessa stood.
“Do not use this to attack me.”
Maya's voice remained quiet.
“I haven't started.”
Daniel raised a hand.
“Enough.”
Maya turned toward him.
“Emma says Sofia saved her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She did.”
“And you hit her.”
“I know.”
“Did Sofia trip Emma?”
“No.”
“Did you see what happened?”
“No.”
“Then why did you hit her?”
Daniel had no answer.
Across town Sofia's phone rang.
Her staffing agency.
Lydia Brooks sounded exhausted.
“Sofia, we've seen the footage.”
“Which footage?”
“All of it that's circulating.”
“Then you haven't seen all of it.”
“We need you to stay away from Hawthorne House pending review.”
“I was already fired.”
“Daniel's office says your placement is terminated.”
Sofia laughed bitterly.
“I saved his daughter.”
“There are also allegations that you threatened Mrs. Harper with a needle.”
“I touched a prosthetic.”
“That's your account.”
“My account?”
“Sofia—”
“You know what? Fine.”
She ended the call.
Five minutes later someone knocked.
A police officer stood outside.
Sofia gave a statement.
Pool.
Trip.
Rescue.
Slap.
Needle.
Deflation.
“Did you know for certain the pregnancy was fake before touching the belly?” Officer Miller asked.
Sofia hesitated.
“No.”
“Then why did you do it?”
“I suspected.”
“Based on what?”
“The shape moved strangely twice. She refused help dressing. I heard air once. And after she tripped Emma, I realized she was lying about more than one thing.”
The officer wrote.
“Did you intend to injure her?”
“No.”
“Did the needle touch skin?”
“No.”
“Any blood?”
“No.”
“Did Mrs. Harper require medical treatment?”
“Not that I know.”
Sofia nodded toward the online video.
“It collapsed.”
Officer Miller looked at her.
“We're going to need the original footage.”
At Hawthorne House, Daniel's public-relations manager, Andrea Bell, prepared a statement.
“Let's call it an employee assault followed by a private medical disclosure.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
Andrea stopped.
“No?”
“I don't know what happened before I came outside.”
Vanessa sat nearby.
She looked toward him.
“Daniel.”
He ignored her.
Andrea said carefully:
“Then we should not accuse Sofia of causing Emma's fall.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“That woman attacked me.”
Daniel turned.
“She exposed a fake stomach.”
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I had lost a baby.”
Daniel looked at her.
For several seconds, he wanted desperately to believe that was the whole truth.
Upstairs Emma lay beneath a pink quilt.
Maya sat beside her.
“What happened at the pool?”
Emma hugged her rabbit.
“Vanessa foot.”
Maya's hand stopped.
“What about her foot?”
Emma stretched one little leg outward.
“I go boom.”
“Did you fall?”
Emma nodded.
“Water.”
“Did Sofia help?”
“Sofia come.”
Maya kept her voice calm.
“Did Vanessa help?”
Emma shook her head.
Then whispered:
“Vanessa smile.”
A cold sensation moved through Maya.
Downstairs, Daniel's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph.
Vanessa standing beside the pool before the party.
Her maternity dress lifted slightly by the breeze.
Beneath the hem, a black elastic strap was visible around her lower back.
