Chapter 12 - The Truth a Child Could CarryEmma brought her stuffed rabbit to the child advocacy center.

Maya and Daniel walked beside her.

The room was bright.

Books.

Soft chairs.

Children's drawings.

A trained interviewer would speak with Emma without coaching.

“Daddy stay?”

“I'll be right here.”

“Mommy?”

“Right here.”

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

Emma looked down.

“Vanessa mad?”

Daniel's chest tightened.

“I don't know.”

“She say I make trouble.”

Maya touched her shoulder.

“You didn't.”

The interview remained private.

Emma described the pool.

The gift.

Vanessa's dress.

Her foot.

She demonstrated a leg extending.

She described hitting it.

Falling.

Water.

Sofia running.

When asked how Vanessa reacted, Emma said:

“She smile.”

The interviewer did not ask why.

Did not tell Emma what Vanessa intended.

The statement would be evaluated alongside physical evidence.

When Emma emerged, she looked tired.

Daniel lifted her.

“Home?”

“Yes.”

That evening Vanessa appeared unexpectedly at Maya's house.

She carried a gift bag.

Maya opened the door but blocked the entrance.

“What do you want?”

“To see Emma.”

“No.”

“She is my stepdaughter.”

“She is frightened.”

“Of me?”

Maya said nothing.

Vanessa looked past her.

“Emma, sweetheart?”

“Don't call her.”

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You always wanted her away from me.”

“No.”

“You hated that Daniel chose me.”

“I hated that Daniel stopped asking questions whenever you spoke.”

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

Behind them a floorboard creaked.

Emma stood in the hallway.

“Vanessa?”

Vanessa transformed.

“My sweet girl.”

She held up the gift.

Maya remained between them.

Emma looked at the bag.

Then:

“Are you mad?”

“Of course not.”

“Because I tell foot?”

Vanessa's face went blank.

Only for a second.

Maya saw.

“Nobody gets mad at Emma for telling what she remembers.”

Vanessa stood.

“I would never.”

Emma's lip trembled.

“Then why say Daddy stop love me?”

Maya felt the room tilt.

Vanessa stared.

Emma began crying.

“I tell Sofia, Daddy no love.”

Maya called Daniel.

Fifteen minutes later he arrived.

Emma was asleep.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen.

Maya repeated what Emma said.

Vanessa lifted both hands.

“She misunderstood.”

Daniel felt something inside him break.

How many times had he heard that?

“Don't.”

Vanessa blinked.

“Daniel?”

“Don't explain my daughter to me.”

“You're choosing Maya.”

“No.”

He pointed toward the hallway.

“I'm choosing Emma.”

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You don't know what you're doing.”

“Then I'll learn.”

She picked up her handbag.

At the door she turned.

“You're very much like your father.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Then she added:

“He thought truth would save him too.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa left.

Later Daniel opened Samuel's notebook.

Near the back:

If continuity amendment reappears without independent review, contact Miriam. Do not sign.

Date:

Five months before Samuel died.

Daniel stared.

An amendment.

The same amendment Vanessa used to claim voting power through her pregnancy.

And his father had explicitly warned against it.
