Chapter 14 - The Backup Nobody Could EraseLuis Ortega agreed to meet Daniel in a church parking lot.

He refused Hawthorne House.

Refused telephone.

Insisted Daniel come alone.

Luis stood beside a silver pickup.

“You came.”

“I almost didn't.”

“Someone threatened you?”

Luis described the black car.

The photograph of his family.

Daniel felt sick.

“Police?”

“I reported it.”

Luis opened the truck.

Removed a system diagram.

“Samuel installed redundant storage.”

“Walter told me.”

“Main cameras local. Selected feeds copied off-site.”

“Does the pool feed exist?”

“Possibly.”

“How long retention?”

“Thirty days unless flagged.”

Daniel checked the date.

Twenty-seven days since the party.

Three days.

“Who can preserve it?”

“Company representative. Insurer. Authorities. Lawyers.”

“I'm still CEO.”

“Then act today.”

Daniel called outside counsel.

Written preservation request.

Entire pool terrace.

Security logs.

Administrator access.

Event time.

He notified Carla and Leah.

Luis watched.

“There's something else.”

He pointed to two cameras.

P-14.

Main pool terrace.

P-15.

Pool-side landscaping angle.

Daniel stared.

“Why didn't Owen show me P-15?”

“Because that angle covers the exact near edge.”

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“It could show Vanessa's leg?”

“Depends on people standing there.”

“And Sofia?”

“Yes.”

Luis continued:

“Someone disconnected the local backup after the incident. But remote archive may already have received the files.”

“Who disconnected it?”

“Logs should show.”

“Why help me?”

Luis looked toward the church.

“Samuel hired me when nobody else would.”

“He did that a lot.”

“He told me a person should be judged by whether he corrects a mistake.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Do you believe that?”

Luis asked.

Daniel had no immediate answer.

That afternoon the provider confirmed preservation.

An hour later Owen entered Daniel's office.

“Vanessa wants an emergency board meeting.”

“About?”

“Leadership.”

Daniel leaned back.

“Me.”

Owen said nothing.

“You've hidden records.”

“Daniel—”

“North Quay. Emma's trust. The amendment. Security.”

Owen looked toward the hallway.

“Keep your voice down.”

“Why?”

“Because people will lose everything.”

“My daughter already nearly did.”

Owen's mouth tightened.

“You think this is simple because you weren't keeping the company alive.”

“Then explain.”

For one second Owen looked ready.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

Courage disappeared.

“I can't.”

He left.

That evening Daniel received formal notice.

Board meeting July 20.

Purpose:

Removal of Daniel Harper as chief executive.

Signed:

Vanessa Harper.

Paul Sutter.

Daniel stared.

He had spent his life believing the company belonged to him because it carried his family name.

Now he was learning ownership and control were not the same.
