Chapter 7 - Eleven Missing SecondsThe digital-forensics examiner arrived Thursday carrying a hard case and an expression that discouraged conversation.

Carla Benton had spent fifteen years investigating corporate-security systems.

“What I need,” she told Owen, “is access to the original recorder, administrator logs and backup configuration.”

“We're cooperating.”

“Good.”

Daniel attended a separate interview.

Carla asked him to describe the pool incident.

“I wasn't outside when Emma fell.”

“What did you see?”

“Sofia holding her.”

“What did you do?”

“I ran to them.”

“Then?”

“I slapped Sofia.”

Carla did not react.

“Why?”

“I believed she'd caused whatever happened.”

“Based on?”

Daniel looked down.

“Nothing I had actually witnessed.”

Carla wrote.

“And the pregnancy?”

“Sofia said, ‘Look closely,’ walked to Vanessa and punctured the prosthetic.”

“Had you known it was fake?”

“No.”

Outside, reporters shouted questions.

Daniel ignored them.

Across town, Maya received an unexpected visitor.

A young woman named Hannah Ellis carried a camera bag.

“I was at the party.”

Maya hesitated.

“My son was invited.”

Hannah opened her camera.

“I think I recorded something.”

She had been filming her son near the pool.

The angle was poor.

People blocked parts of the scene.

But the audio was clear.

Footsteps.

Emma laughing.

A soft impact.

The gift box hitting stone.

A splash.

Then, after the splash, a woman's short laugh.

Maya stopped breathing.

The video then captured Sofia shouting Emma's name.

Running footsteps.

Maya looked at Hannah.

“Original file?”

“Yes.”

“Don't edit it.”

“I haven't.”

The authorities later received the file through proper process.

It did not clearly show Vanessa's leg.

But it supported Sofia's timeline.

Emma contacted Vanessa.

Emma fell.

Vanessa laughed only after the splash.

Sofia ran.

At Samuel's old office, Daniel opened his father's notebook.

A brass plaque stood above the desk:

TRUST IS BUILT BEFORE IT IS NEEDED.

Inside the notebook:

Never let family loyalty replace financial controls.

A folded letter fell out.

Son,

If you ever believe protecting the Harper name requires hiding the truth, choose the truth.

A business can be rebuilt.

Trust is harder.

Daniel sat slowly.

His phone rang.

Carla.

“We found evidence the security archive was manually interrupted.”

“By who?”

“Still investigating.”

“And the missing eleven seconds?”

“Not on the primary recorder.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Carla continued.

“But your father's old security design included an off-site backup.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

May you like

“Does it still exist?”

“We're finding out.”
