Chapter 19 - The Accountant Who Finally SpokeOwen Price entered Leah Shaw's office with his own attorney.

He carried a hard-sided briefcase.
His face looked gray.
Sofia was not present.
The lawyers addressed how documents could be handled.
No immunity.
No promises.
Owen almost seemed relieved.
“I'm not here because I'm innocent.”
His attorney touched his sleeve.
“Facts.”
Owen opened the case.
Trust schedules.
Board emails.
Transfer authorizations.
Denise later reconciled them against bank records.
Preliminary tracing:
$1.46 million withdrawn without proper authority from Emma's trust.
Approximately $1.02 million used for Harper Leisure operations and debts.
The remaining $440,000 flowed through affiliated accounts and appeared tied to personal benefits, including Vanessa's private investment and expenses.
No legitimate collateral.
No repayment schedule.
No independent approval.
The $90,000 scholarship transfer involving Maya was separate.
Same network.
North Quay.
Daniel reviewed the findings.
“She said she was saving the company.”
Denise nodded.
“Some money may have supported the company. That doesn't create authority.”
Maya sat nearby.
“My credentials?”
“The transaction came from an administrative session associated with Owen's workstation.”
Maya looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
Owen had helped create the records used against her.
Later Owen met investigators.
He admitted:
Approving trust transfers.
Helping conceal them.
Participating in the fake pregnancy documentation.
Delaying disclosure.
Allowing Maya to be blamed.
Helping edit the pool footage.
Then came the most important piece.
A calendar invitation.
Four days before the incident.
Operational Contingency Meeting.
Vanessa.
Owen.
Consultant.
Notes:
A controlled household-safety event could accelerate Daniel's acceptance of sale terms.
Sofia Bennett is positioned to serve as an immediate responder and credible source of staff negligence if necessary.
One investigator looked at Owen.
“You expected Sofia to rescue Emma?”
“Yes.”
“And then you expected people to blame her?”
Owen looked down.
“Yes.”
“What if she had not reached Emma?”
His lips trembled.
No answer.
That evening Leah called Sofia.
“Owen is cooperating.”
“Does that mean over?”
“No.”
“Did he say why me?”
Leah paused.
“Yes.”
Sofia sat on her balcony.
“They chose you because Vanessa knew you were protective of Emma and because you had questioned the pregnancy.”
Sofia stared into darkness.
“So they counted on me doing the right thing.”
“Yes.”
“And used it against me.”
“Yes.”
Sofia closed her eyes.
She thought of Emma clinging to her wet uniform.
“I'm glad I saw her fall.”
“So am I.”
“But I'll never forget what happened after.”
May you like
Leah did not tell her to move on.
She listened.
