Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew There Was No BabySofia expected anger when she met Tessa Quinn.

Instead, she found fear.

They sat in the back booth of an all-night diner near the highway.

Tessa was forty-two, with silver beginning at her temples and the exhausted face of someone who had spent months waiting for a problem to return.

She placed a manila folder between them.

“Before I show you this, tell me exactly what happened.”

Sofia did.

Emma running with the gift.

Vanessa's leg.

The splash.

The rescue.

Daniel.

The slap.

Then the belly.

When Sofia finished, Tessa looked down.

“I'm sorry.”

“You didn't hit me.”

“No. But I knew something was wrong.”

Sofia looked at the folder.

“Who are you?”

“I was Vanessa's private maternity nurse.”

Sofia stared.

“She had a private nurse?”

“For about six weeks.”

“When?”

“At the beginning of the supposed pregnancy.”

Tessa removed three documents.

The first was a maternity-care schedule.

The second was a private insurance verification request.

The third was a letter Vanessa wanted Tessa to sign.

Sofia read it.

Patient is currently experiencing a high-risk third-trimester pregnancy and requires residential assistance and travel restrictions.

The date was from four months earlier.

“You refused?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I'd never seen medical evidence she was pregnant.”

Sofia looked up.

Tessa continued.

“She told the household she was fourteen weeks pregnant when I was hired. She said all medical care was being handled by an exclusive private clinic.”

“Did you go?”

“She never allowed me.”

“That didn't seem strange?”

“Very.”

Tessa leaned forward.

“My job was supposed to manage nausea, nutrition, blood pressure and home support. But Vanessa would not let me palpate her abdomen. She wouldn't allow me to accompany her to appointments. She refused routine observations unless Daniel was present.”

“What happened when he was present?”

“She performed.”

Sofia stared.

“Performed?”

“Complaints. Back pain. Cravings. Shortness of breath.”

Tessa opened another file.

“I asked to verify the obstetric instructions because she wanted me to sign insurance and travel documents. The clinic named in her paperwork told me they could not confirm anything without patient authorization. That was normal. So I asked Vanessa to authorize release.”

“She refused.”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

“She fired me.”

“Just for asking?”

“Not immediately.”

Tessa removed a photograph.

A discarded adhesive strip.

Medical-grade silicone.

Sofia recognized the material.

“Prosthetic?”

“I found that in her dressing room.”

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“What did Daniel say?”

“I never spoke to him.”

“Why?”

“Vanessa's attorney sent me a confidentiality warning.”

Tessa looked out the window.

“Then Owen Price called.”

“Who?”

“Chief financial officer of Harper Leisure Group.”

Sofia knew the name.

Daniel's family company owned hotels, marinas and the land surrounding Hawthorne House.

“What did he want?”

“He said Vanessa's pregnancy was part of a sensitive family transition and that speculation could damage the business.”

Sofia frowned.

“Why would a pregnancy affect the company?”

Tessa gave a tired smile.

“That is exactly what I asked.”

She pushed another document forward.

FAMILY CONTINUITY TRUST — BENEFICIARY REALLOCATION REVIEW.

Sofia read.

“I don't understand.”

“Neither did I at first.”

Tessa leaned closer.

“Daniel's late father established a trust holding controlling shares of Harper Leisure. Emma already has a beneficial interest.”

“And Vanessa?”

“Under a later amendment, Daniel's spouse can receive temporary voting authority over a portion of the trust while carrying another Harper descendant.”

Sofia stared.

“While pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It made enough sense on paper to give her leverage.”

“Was the amendment real?”

Tessa looked at her.

“I don't know.”

Sofia thought about the deflating belly.

For the first time, the fake pregnancy became more than a cruel private lie.

It could have been a key.

Something that opened control over money.

Shares.

May you like

A company.

And Emma's inheritance.
