Chapter 4 - The Price of SilenceThe envelope arrived at Sofia's apartment Monday morning.

Inside was a letter from Hawthorne House's counsel.

A proposed separation agreement.

Twenty thousand dollars.

In exchange Sofia would waive employment claims, agree not to disparage the Harper family and acknowledge that her use of a sharp object during the pool incident had been “unauthorized and reasonably perceived as dangerous.”

No mention of saving Emma.

No mention of Daniel striking her.

No acknowledgment that Vanessa's stomach was a prosthetic.

Chloe read over Sofia's shoulder.

“Twenty thousand.”

“Yes.”

“That could pay almost everything Mom still owes.”

Their mother had undergone cancer treatment two years earlier.

Sofia had helped with bills.

Twenty thousand mattered.

That was the point.

Sofia placed the agreement on the table.

“If I sign, the video still makes me look like I attacked a pregnant woman.”

Chloe stopped.

“You're right.”

“That doesn't make saying no easy.”

At attorney Leah Shaw's office that afternoon, Sofia pushed the agreement across the desk.

Leah read carefully.

“They're trying to close this quickly.”

“Can they?”

“They can offer.”

“Can they blacklist me?”

“They can create problems. That doesn't make retaliation lawful.”

Sofia touched her cheek.

The bruise had faded to yellow.

“What about Daniel?”

“The assault is separate.”

“And Vanessa?”

“The pool incident, the fake pregnancy, any financial wrongdoing and your employment are separate issues even if the facts overlap.”

Sofia nodded.

She had expected promises.

Leah gave none.

“We preserve evidence first.”

That evening Daniel returned to Hawthorne House after the guests, reporters and temporary staff had left.

The mansion felt enormous.

Quiet.

The nursery door remained closed.

He entered the security room.

Owen Price was already there.

“You should be home,” Owen said.

“I want the pool footage.”

“Legal is handling it.”

“I didn't ask legal.”

Owen hesitated.

Then opened the system.

The main pool camera showed Emma running into frame.

The view was partially blocked by a parasol.

Timestamp:

2:16:03.

Then the footage jumped.

2:16:14.

Eleven seconds missing.

The next image showed Sofia kneeling with Emma.

Daniel frowned.

“Where are the eleven seconds?”

“System interruption.”

“This records continuously.”

“Usually.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Did someone delete it?”

“No evidence.”

“Then why is it gone?”

Owen looked away.

Daniel noticed the export history.

2:32 p.m.

Sixteen minutes after the incident.

Administrative user:

VHARPER.

Daniel read it again.

Vanessa's account.

“Why did she export this?”

Owen swallowed.

“You should ask her.”

Daniel went upstairs.

Vanessa was packing.

“Did you access the pool footage?”

She looked up.

“What?”

“Eleven seconds are missing.”

“Technical problems happen.”

“The export came from your account.”

Vanessa slowly placed a blouse into the suitcase.

Then, instead of denying it, she said:

“Do you remember what happened to Harper Leisure after your father died?”

Daniel stared.

“What does that have to do with Emma?”

“Everything.”

She opened a drawer and removed a photograph.

Samuel Harper stood beside Daniel at the opening of the family's first resort.

On the back:

FOR THE NEXT GENERATION.

Vanessa placed it between them.

“Your father left you something enormous.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And if you keep digging into private matters, you may lose it.”

May you like

For the first time since marrying her, Daniel was certain Vanessa was not asking for protection.

She was warning him.
