Chapter 5 - Malik’s Question

Malik called Ethan that night.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“You don't sound okay.”
“You either.”
Malik was quiet.
Then:
“My mom wants to talk to your dad.”
“Why?”
“Because Mrs. Harper didn’t punish me.”
Ethan frowned.
“That isn't your fault.”
“I know.”
“But?”
Malik exhaled.
“She’s been nice to me all year.”
“So?”
“She hates everyone.”
Despite everything, Ethan almost laughed.
Malik continued:
“She gives me late passes. Lets me redo work. She told my mom I should apply for a special program.”
Ethan sat up.
“What program?”
“Hartwell Future Scholars.”
Ethan stopped.
“What?”
The same Hartwell?
Malik sent a screenshot.
Hartwell Integrated Services funded scholarships through Tomorrow Forward Foundation.
The foundation connected to Principal West.
The organization that gave Mrs. Harper money.
Malik said:
“My mom filled out paperwork last month.”
“Did you get accepted?”
“Mrs. Harper said probably.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
“So she protected you because of the scholarship?”
“I don’t know.”
Malik sounded ashamed.
Ethan immediately corrected him.
“You didn't ask her to dump trash on me.”
“I know.”
“Then don't make her choice yours.”
Malik became quiet.
“My mom says we should pull out.”
“From the scholarship?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“Because it feels dirty.”
Ethan understood.
But something bothered him.
If Hartwell wanted to silence Michael and Daniel through Ethan, why publicly spare Malik?
Then Jason joined the call.
“I have something.”
He had gone through the full recording frame by frame.
Before Mrs. Harper lifted the trash bin, she looked toward her desk.
Toward the blue folder.
Then toward Ethan.
Then Malik.
Jason said:
“She knew exactly who she wanted.”
Ethan replied:
“We already know that.”
“No. Look at this.”
Jason sent a zoomed still.
A sticky note was attached to the folder.
Two handwritten names:
ETHAN — MORGAN
MALIK — RIVERS / HFS
HFS.
Hartwell Future Scholars.
Malik went silent.
They were both in the file.
One was being punished.
One was being protected.
Same teacher.
Same class.
Same offense.
Different usefulness.
The unequal treatment had not been random.
It had been designed.
And Malik realized something even worse.
Mrs. Harper had spent months making him feel special.
May you like
Not because she believed in him.
Because his family had become part of the same machine.
