Chapter 12 - Daniel’s Father

Family secrets surfaced whenever money did.

Daniel found another letter among his father’s papers.

Addressed to Michael.

Never sent.

You keep confusing being overlooked with being cheated.

Daniel sat in the garage and read.

Their father had recognized Michael’s resentment.

He had also contributed to it.

He praised Daniel’s discipline publicly.

Criticized Michael’s ambition.

Then secretly funded Michael’s company.

A contradiction.

Daniel read another line:

Daniel believes I trust him more. You believe I love him more. Both of you are wrong. I simply failed to tell either of you what I feared for you.

Ethan found his father crying.

He had almost never seen that.

“What happened?”

Daniel handed him the letter.

Ethan read.

“Grandpa kind of messed you guys up.”

Daniel laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Michael arrived later.

Daniel showed him.

Michael read silently.

Then sat on the concrete step.

For years, Michael believed Daniel inherited respect while he received suspicion.

Daniel believed Michael received money while he had to earn everything through discipline.

Both had partial truths.

Neither had the whole story.

Michael whispered:

“He gave me the startup money because he thought I’d fail.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Read the next page.”

Their father wrote that Michael possessed instincts he himself lacked.

He feared Michael would destroy himself trying to prove value through money.

The $180,000 had been support.

Not pity.

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Twenty years.”

Daniel sat beside him.

They did not reconcile dramatically.

Too much remained.

Michael had hidden debt.

Used Daniel’s reputation.

Kept evidence for leverage.

Risked family property.

But understanding changed the shape of anger.

Ethan watched.

Family betrayal did not disappear when motive became understandable.

But motive prevented betrayal from becoming cartoon villainy.

That mattered.

Michael said:

“I'll turn everything over.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

“Even what hurts you?”

Michael looked at Daniel.

May you like

“Especially that.”

For the first time, Daniel believed him.
