Chapter 14 - Ethan Returns to Room 214

Ethan returned after seven school days.

Mrs. Harper was gone.

A substitute teacher stood at the front.

No trash bin beside the desk.

It had been removed as evidence.

Ethan stopped at the doorway.

His body reacted before his mind.

Shoulders tightened.

Face hot.

A student whispered his name.

The substitute approached.

“You can take a minute.”

“I’m fine.”

He wasn't.

“Okay.”

She stepped back.

No forced reassurance.

Ethan entered.

Malik sat in his usual seat.

Jason behind them.

Nothing looked different.

Everything felt different.

At lunch, students surrounded Ethan.

“What’s gonna happen to Harper?”

“Is your dad suing?”

“Did Hartwell bribe her?”

“Was it racist?”

Ethan stopped at that question.

He looked at Malik.

The visual had invited the assumption.

White boy punished.

Black boy spared.

But the evidence showed something more cynical.

Mrs. Harper exploited Malik’s scholarship status and Ethan’s family connection.

Race was part of how the contrast would be perceived.

But Ethan would not claim a motive evidence had not established.

“I don’t know what was in her head about race,” he said.

A student frowned.

“But she singled you out.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

“Because they were using both of us differently.”

Malik nodded.

That answer was less viral.

More true.

Later, Ethan saw the replacement trash bin.

Ordinary gray plastic.

His stomach tightened.

He asked the teacher if it could be moved farther back.

She moved it.

No argument.

No demand that he “get over it.”

That small accommodation meant more than speeches.
