Chapter 16 - Mrs. Harper’s Past

A former student named Lily Chen contacted Rebecca.
She had attended another school where Mrs. Harper taught eight years earlier.
“She used humiliation there too.”
Not trash.
Different method.
She made students stand holding failed papers above their heads.
Read mistakes aloud.
Threatened recommendation letters.
One parent complained.
Nothing happened.
Another student, Brandon Hale, remembered Mrs. Harper targeting children whose parents challenged school policy.
“She loved leverage.”
That word appeared repeatedly.
Records showed no formal discipline against her.
Why?
Principal West had worked at the same prior school as assistant principal for part of that period.
Complaints were closed as unsubstantiated.
Rebecca obtained one old email through a former family’s records.
West to Harper:
Avoid methods that leave marks. Parents react to what they can photograph.
Daniel read it.
His face went pale.
Not proof she approved abuse.
But devastating evidence she understood the risk of physical evidence rather than focusing on student welfare.
Mrs. Harper’s pattern predated Hartwell.
Hartwell did not create her cruelty.
It found someone already comfortable with power.

West did not invent the weapon.
She learned where to aim it.
