Chapter 2 - The Folder on the Desk

Ethan was still in the classroom when the principal arrived.

Mrs. Harper had finally allowed him and Malik to stand.

The trash remained on the floor.

“Do not touch anything,” Principal Caroline West ordered.

She was fifty-three, sharply dressed, with the controlled voice of someone accustomed to ending arguments simply by entering a room.

Mrs. Harper folded her arms.

“These boys fell asleep during instruction.”

Principal West looked at Ethan.

“And the trash?”

Mrs. Harper did not hesitate.

“A dramatic teaching demonstration.”

Ethan laughed once.

“You dumped it on me.”

“I emptied a classroom bin to illustrate disrespect.”

“On my head.”

“You moved underneath it.”

Malik stared at her.

“No, he didn’t.”

Everyone turned.

Malik swallowed but continued.

“You aimed it at Ethan.”

Mrs. Harper’s eyes narrowed.

“You need to be very careful accusing a teacher of intentional misconduct.”

Malik’s face changed.

Not fear exactly.

Recognition.

Ethan noticed.

“You saw it.”

Malik looked down.

Principal West raised a hand.

“We’ll conduct interviews.”

Jason sat at his desk with his phone hidden beneath his leg.

The video had already left the room.

Good.

Mrs. Harper could not erase what Daniel had received.

Principal West turned to Ethan.

“Why did you challenge your teacher?”

“Because she dumped trash on me.”

“You raised your voice.”

“She humiliated me.”

“You were asleep during instruction.”

“So was Malik.”

The principal looked toward Malik.

A strange silence followed.

Mrs. Harper answered instead.

“Malik acknowledged his mistake.”

Malik looked confused.

“No, I didn’t.”

The principal’s eyes shifted toward him.

“What?”

“I didn’t say anything.”

Mrs. Harper smiled thinly.

“You apologized before Ethan became disruptive.”

“No.”

Malik’s voice grew firmer.

“I never apologized.”

Principal West looked from one boy to the other.

Ethan saw it.

The smallest crack in the adults’ story.

Then Mrs. Harper walked toward her desk.

Ethan followed her movement.

The dark blue folder.

She reached it.

His heartbeat increased.

“What’s that?”

Mrs. Harper’s hand stopped.

“What?”

“That folder.”

Principal West turned.

Mrs. Harper calmly placed one hand over it.

“Student records.”

“My dad’s name is on it.”

Mrs. Harper’s expression did not change.

But Principal West’s did.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Ethan saw.

“What is Morgan Family Review?”

Silence.

Jason slowly turned his phone camera back on beneath his desk.

Mrs. Harper replied:

“You misunderstood what you saw.”

“I can read.”

“That folder is confidential.”

“Why does my teacher have a confidential folder about my family?”

Principal West stepped forward.

“Ethan, enough.”

“No.”

The word shocked the room.

Ethan pointed toward Mrs. Harper.

“She knew about my dad. She said he was important. Now there’s a folder with our name on it.”

West’s composure sharpened.

“You are thirteen years old. There are school matters you do not understand.”

“What school matter needs a file about my family?”

Mrs. Harper grabbed the folder.

Principal West said quickly:

“Bring that to my office.”

Jason recorded everything.

The principal noticed him this time.

“Jason.”

His heart stopped.

“Give me the phone.”

Jason stood.

“No.”

“Excuse me?”

“My mom says I don't have to give you my personal phone unless she’s here.”

Principal West’s face hardened.

“You are recording staff without consent.”

Jason’s hand shook.

But he remembered the sent confirmation.

Even if they took the phone, Daniel already had the first video.

“I’m calling my mom.”

Mrs. Harper stepped toward him.

“Hand it over.”

Jason backed away.

Ethan moved between them.

“Don’t touch him.”

The classroom erupted in whispers.

Principal West shouted:

“Enough!”

Everyone froze.

Then the hallway windows began vibrating faintly.

A distant mechanical thump.

Students looked toward the glass.

Jason smiled without meaning to.

Mrs. Harper heard it too.

“What is that?”

Ethan’s expression changed.

He knew that sound.

Helicopter rotors.

Not landing at the school.

But approaching the nearby municipal field used for authorized aircraft.

Daniel was coming.

Mrs. Harper suddenly gripped the blue folder tighter.

And Principal West whispered something so quietly that only Mrs. Harper heard.

Jason’s phone caught part of it.

“Get that file out of here before he arrives.”

Mrs. Harper nodded.

Ethan did not hear.

May you like

Jason did.

And for the second time that morning, he pressed SEND.
