Chapter 13 - Hartwell

Hartwell Integrated Services hired excellent lawyers.
Its public statement denied involvement in school discipline.
That claim was likely true in the narrowest sense.
No email said:
Dump trash on Ethan.
But corporate communications showed something else.
Pressure.
Hartwell executives discussed Michael’s bid challenge.
One executive wrote:
West says school-side influence may cool the family issue.
Another:
Keep foundation relationships insulated. No direct contact with minor.
Rebecca read the line twice.
“They knew minors could become involved.”
Daniel asked:
“Is that criminal?”
“Not automatically.”
Another email:
Foundation should continue Rivers support. Morgan situation needs a separate approach.
Again.
Contrast.
Hartwell’s legal team argued “Morgan situation” meant Michael, not Ethan.
Possible.
Then West’s replies connected the language.
Ethan remains resistant to Harper.
Harder to explain.
Procurement investigators opened a formal corruption inquiry.
No arrests.
No dramatic raids yet.
Subpoenas.
Servers preserved.
Bank records requested.
Hartwell’s share price was irrelevant because it was privately held.
But lenders became nervous.
Clients asked questions.
A separate ethics investigation reviewed Tomorrow Forward.
The foundation suspended West and Harper immediately.
Malik saw the news.
“So now they're pretending they didn't know.”
Renee answered:
“Maybe some didn't.”
That distinction again.
Organizations contained people.
Some complicit.
Some careless.
Some innocent.
Some courageous.

Malik hated nuance.
Nuance was still true.
