Chapter 9 - The Report That Wasn’t Grant’sOfficer Grant received an email asking him to confirm a supplemental statement.

He opened it.

His employee ID.

His name.

Words he never wrote.

Officer Grant observed escalating aggression prior to student assault.

He printed it.

Walked directly to Principal Kline.

“This is false.”

Kline read.

Her face tightened.

“Who created it?”

Audit log.

Darlene Brooks.

Assistant principal.

Brooks claimed it was a draft based on “verbal understanding.”

Grant said:

“I never gave you that understanding.”

“You said Jayden looked angry.”

“After the slap.”

Brooks looked at Kline.

“This is being exaggerated.”

Grant pointed toward the document.

“My name is on it.”

Brooks went quiet.

She was placed on administrative leave that afternoon.

Jayden heard at home.

He expected satisfaction.

Instead, he felt uneasy.

“How many people are in this?”

Owen said:

“Maybe fewer than it feels like.”

“But everyone keeps protecting everyone.”

Rosa corrected:

“Some are protecting jobs. Some are protecting money. Some are protecting themselves.”

“Same difference.”

“No.”

She sat beside him.

“Motive matters.”

Jayden sighed.

More complexity.

He wanted Mrs. Harper to be evil.

Voss corrupt.

Brooks corrupt.

Everyone cleanly divided.

Reality refused.

Brooks had not taken Voss money.

At least none investigators found.

She had protected Mrs. Harper because Mrs. Harper produced high test scores and few formal complaints.

Brooks wanted promotion.

Bad numbers hurt.

Bad publicity hurt more.

She altered the report to simplify the story.

Teacher attacked.

Student disciplined.

Problem closed.

No conspiracy payment required.

Only cowardice.

Jayden realized systems could become corrupt without everybody meeting in a dark room.

May you like

Sometimes each person made one selfish choice.

The choices connected themselves.
