Chapter 15 - The Board MeetingJayden did not want to speak.

Then Sophie Bennett said:
“I wish I had.”
That changed his mind.
The auditorium was full.
Parents.
Teachers.
Reporters.
Board members.
Jayden walked to the microphone.
“My name is Jayden Cole.”
His hands shook.
“I hit Mrs. Harper.”
The room quieted.
“I’m not proud of that.”
He looked toward Owen and Rosa.
“My parents didn’t teach me to hit people.”
Then toward the board.
“But Mrs. Harper making me kneel, hitting my hand, insulting my family, and using private information about us did not become okay because I reacted badly.”
Nobody moved.
Jayden continued.
“I thought being strong meant nobody could embarrass me.”
His voice cracked.
“I was wrong.”
He looked at Officer Grant.
“Officer Grant came in after I lost control. He believed Mrs. Harper first.”
Grant lowered his eyes.
“He apologized.”
Grant looked up.
Jayden continued.
“That matters.”
Then:
“The worst thing was not one ruler.”
He paused.
“It was adults deciding children from certain families were easier to humiliate because our parents worked jobs they didn’t respect.”
Rosa covered her mouth.
Jayden finished:
“Believe evidence. Not titles. Not expensive clothes. Not who talks first.”
Then stepped away.
No dramatic applause at first.
Then Sophie stood.
Then Mia.
Then others.
Jayden did not smile.

This was not victory.
It was record.
