Chapter 2 - The Story She Told FirstAssistant Principal Darlene Brooks arrived before Jayden reached the administrative office.

“What happened?”
Officer Grant answered.
“Physical altercation involving Mrs. Harper.”
Brooks looked at Jayden.
“You hit a teacher?”
“She hit me first.”
Brooks stopped.
“What?”
“With a ruler.”
“That is not what happened.”
Mrs. Harper appeared behind them.
The fake tears had returned.
Brooks opened the conference-room door.
“Everybody inside.”
Jayden sat.
Mrs. Harper remained standing.
Officer Grant took a position near the wall.
Brooks opened her laptop.
“Mrs. Harper?”
She inhaled shakily.
“Jayden became disruptive during class.”
Jayden stared at her.
“I asked him to follow instructions.”
She continued.
“He refused. He became aggressive, stood up, and struck me.”
Jayden laughed once.
Brooks looked at him sharply.
“Something funny?”
“She skipped the part where I was on my knees.”
Mrs. Harper stiffened.
Brooks frowned.
“You were kneeling?”
“She made me.”
“That is false.”
“You hit my hand.”
Mrs. Harper looked toward Brooks.
“Absolutely not.”
Officer Grant finally spoke.
“What about the ruler?”
Mrs. Harper looked at him.
“What?”
“You had one.”
“It’s a classroom ruler.”
“Did you use it on him?”
“No.”
Jayden extended his palm.
A faint red line crossed the center.
Grant looked at it.
Then at Mrs. Harper.
His expression changed slightly.
Brooks noticed.
“Jayden, how did that happen?”
“The ruler.”
Mrs. Harper shook her head.
“He could have done that anywhere.”
Jayden stared.
Grant’s jaw tightened.
Brooks typed something.
“Regardless, you admit you slapped her?”
Jayden hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Mrs. Harper relaxed.
Brooks continued typing.
“Then we have an admitted assault on an employee.”
“After she hit me and insulted my parents.”
Brooks stopped.
“What did she say?”
Mrs. Harper answered first.
“Nothing inappropriate.”
Jayden’s voice became colder.
“She said my parents were nothing but fish sellers and that I smelled like fish.”
Mrs. Harper looked toward him.
“I was discussing hygiene.”
Jayden almost stood.
Officer Grant raised one hand.
“Stay seated.”
Jayden remained.
Grant asked:
“Those exact words?”
“Yes.”
Mrs. Harper’s face tightened.
Brooks closed the laptop.
“I’m calling his parents.”
Mrs. Harper looked away.
Jayden noticed.
For the first time since entering the office, she looked genuinely nervous.
Not about Officer Grant.
Not about the slap.
About his parents.
Twenty-six minutes later, Owen and Rosa Cole entered.
Owen still wore rubber deck boots.
Rosa had a navy work apron folded under one arm.
They had come straight from Cole Harbor Seafood.
Rosa saw Jayden’s hand before she saw anything else.
“What happened?”
Mrs. Harper said:
“Your son assaulted me.”
Owen looked at Jayden.
“Did you?”
Jayden’s chest tightened.
“Yes.”
Rosa closed her eyes.
Mrs. Harper’s mouth moved toward something almost resembling satisfaction.
Then Owen asked:
“Why?”
Jayden looked at him.
“She made me kneel.”
Mrs. Harper interrupted.
“He was being disciplined.”
“She hit me with a ruler.”
“I did not.”
“And she called you nothing.”
Owen went still.
“What?”
Jayden repeated it.
Every word.
Your parents are nothing but fish sellers.
No wonder you always smell like fish.
Rosa stared at Mrs. Harper.
Mrs. Harper folded her arms.
“I may have used an unfortunate phrase.”
Owen walked slowly toward her.
Officer Grant shifted position.
Owen stopped before Grant needed to intervene.
“Did you make my son kneel?”
Mrs. Harper said:
“He refused classroom expectations.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Brooks intervened.
“Mr. Cole—”
“Did she?”
Brooks looked down.
“We are investigating.”
Owen laughed without humor.
Mrs. Harper said:
“Your son hit me.”
Owen turned toward Jayden.
“And he’ll answer for that.”
Jayden’s eyes fell.
His father continued.
“But if you think that means nobody is going to ask what happened before his hand moved, you’ve misunderstood me.”
Mrs. Harper’s confidence faded.
Brooks printed a document.
“Jayden will be placed on emergency suspension pending disciplinary review.”
Owen took the paper.
He read the first paragraph.
His eyebrows rose.
“Unprovoked physical assault?”
Jayden looked up.
Grant crossed the room.
“Let me see that.”
Brooks hesitated.
Grant took the page.
He read.
“I wouldn’t use ‘unprovoked.’”
Mrs. Harper turned.
“Officer Grant?”
“You didn’t see the beginning.”
“Neither did you.”
“Exactly.”
He pointed toward Jayden’s palm.
“And there is an injury allegation.”
Brooks’s expression tightened.
“It’s redness.”
“It’s evidence.”
For the first time, Jayden looked at Officer Grant differently.
Grant had entered angry.
He had assumed.
But now he was correcting the record.
Brooks took the page back.
“I’ll revise it.”
Outside the office, Mia Torres waited with her backpack.
She had told the receptionist she needed to speak with Jayden.
Nobody had listened.
Then Rosa stepped into the hallway.
Mia stood.
“Mrs. Cole?”
Rosa looked at her.
“I’m in Jayden’s class.”
“Okay.”
“I have something.”
Mia held out her phone.
Rosa saw Mrs. Harper on the frozen screen.
Jayden kneeling below her.
“What is that?”
Mia swallowed.
“A video.”
Rosa stared.
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
Then Mia corrected herself.
May you like
“Almost everything.”
She pressed PLAY.
