Chapter 19 - Claire Harper TestifiesClaire Harper wore gray.

No fake tears.

Not at first.

She admitted making Jayden kneel.

Called it “an outdated disciplinary choice.”

She admitted using the ruler.

Denied intended contact.

Video contradicted part of that.

She admitted the insult.

Called it “an indefensible lapse.”

Then came the spreadsheet.

Student pride linked to parents.

Counsel asked:

“Why record that?”

“Classroom management.”

“Why note family financial vulnerability?”

“Context.”

“For what?”

She hesitated.

Then the Voss message.

Waterfront offer.

Pressure.

Claire finally lost control.

“You have no idea what teaching is like!”

Silence.

“Parents challenge everything. Administrators demand results. Students mock authority.”

Counsel waited.

Claire continued.

“I spent twenty years controlling classrooms nobody else could.”

Controlling.

Not teaching.

The word hung there.

Counsel asked:

“Did Jayden deserve to be humiliated?”

Claire could have stopped.

Apologized.

Saved something.

Instead:

“He needed consequences.”

Jayden closed his eyes.

There it was.

After everything, she still believed the problem was the child who refused humiliation quietly.
