Chapter 18 - Grant’s TestimonyOfficer Grant testified during the district hearing.

He described what he saw.
Mrs. Harper holding her cheek.
Jayden standing.
His own immediate assumption.
Then what evidence later showed.
The ruler.
Audio.
Video.
Grant said:
“I treated the adult’s account as inherently more reliable.”
Counsel asked:
“Why?”
Grant paused.
“Authority bias.”
Jayden had never heard the phrase.
Grant continued.
“The teacher was the employee. The student was the accused. I entered after physical contact.”
“Did you correct your assumption?”
“Yes.”
“Quickly?”
Grant looked toward Jayden.
“Not quickly enough.”
Jayden felt something release.
Not forgiveness exactly.
Recognition.
Grant’s honesty mattered because he had nothing to gain.
Afterward, Jayden approached.
“You didn’t have to say that.”
“Yes, I did.”
Grant smiled.
May you like
“Evidence, remember?”
Jayden smiled back.
