Chapter 23 - Mrs. Harper’s Last Day as a TeacherThe state licensing board revoked Claire Harper’s teaching license after formal proceedings.

She could appeal.

She didn’t.

Her attorney said cost.

Maybe.

Maybe she knew.

She returned to Harbor Ridge once after hours to collect personal belongings.

A district employee supervised.

Her classroom was already different.

New teacher.

New posters.

The ruler remained evidence.

Claire packed two awards.

A mug.

Family photos.

One certificate read:

EXCELLENCE IN STUDENT LEADERSHIP.

She stared at it for a long time.

Then placed it face down.

At the doorway hung a new poster:

STUDENTS MAY REPORT CONCERNS WITHOUT RETALIATION.

Claire looked at it.

No one spoke.

She left.

The door closed.

For twenty years she had controlled that room.

Now the room continued without her.

That was the bitter ending power never expects.
