Chapter 8 - Victor’s Second Secret

Elena found the bank notice accidentally.

It was hidden inside an envelope beneath the truck registration.

FORECLOSURE WARNING.

She carried it into the kitchen.

Victor knew immediately.

“No.”

Elena threw it onto the table.

“You said the house wasn’t involved.”

“It wasn’t originally.”

Jayden stopped on the stairs.

Victor looked toward him.

Too late.

Elena’s voice broke.

“You refinanced the house?”

Victor sat.

The market had nearly failed eighteen months earlier.

Fuel costs rose.

A freezer system collapsed.

Insurance covered only part of it.

Victor borrowed against the home.

Elena had signed a stack of documents.

She remembered.

But Victor had described them as refinancing existing debt.

He had not explained how much additional risk they were taking.

“You lied again.”

“I was trying—”

“Do not say you were trying to save us.”

Victor stopped.

Jayden came downstairs.

“How long until we lose the house?”

“We’re not losing it.”

“That’s what you said about the market.”

Victor stood.

“I made mistakes.”

Jayden laughed bitterly.

“You told me yesterday that hitting Mrs. Harper gave her a mistake to use against me.”

Victor’s face tightened.

Jayden pointed at the notice.

“What did you give Adrian to use against us?”

Silence.

Then Victor admitted one final detail.

Adrian had personally guaranteed part of the refinancing.

If Victor defaulted, Adrian could pursue additional company rights under a side agreement.

Elena sat down.

“So he didn’t just betray us.”

She looked at Victor.

“You gave him the door.”

Victor did not answer.

That night, Jayden heard his parents arguing behind their bedroom door.

Not screaming.

Worse.

Quiet voices.

Broken trust.

For the first time, Jayden understood that his family could survive enemies more easily than secrets.

The next morning, Rachel called.

“I found something in the school committee records.”

A draft recommendation had been prepared three weeks before the classroom incident.

It proposed acquiring several Harbor Street parcels.

One was 412.

The Cole market.

But beside the parcel was a handwritten notation visible in a scanned attachment.

OWNER RESISTANT — FAMILY PRESSURE MAY CHANGE POSITION.

Elena whispered, “Family pressure?”

Rachel continued.

“There are initials beside it.”

Victor asked, “Whose?”

P.H.

May you like

Patricia Harper.

Mrs. Harper.
