Chapter 2 - The Video They Wanted Gone

Officer Grant closed the conference-room door but did not sit.
Jayden remained in a chair across from the empty principal’s desk.
His palm was still red.
Grant looked at it.
“You need the nurse?”
“No.”
“Your hand hurts.”
“I said no.”
Grant exhaled.
“Jayden, I’m trying to help you.”
“Then believe me.”
“I didn’t say I didn’t.”
Jayden finally looked up.
Grant’s expression was different now.
Less angry.
More cautious.
“I saw you standing,” Grant said. “I saw Mrs. Harper holding her cheek. I didn’t see what happened before I entered.”
“She used the ruler.”
“And you hit her.”
Jayden’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“You understand that those can both be wrong?”
Jayden hated the question because he knew the answer.
“Yes.”
The door opened.
Principal Sloan entered carrying a yellow disciplinary form.
Mrs. Harper was not with her.
“Your parents have been contacted.”
Jayden sat straighter.
“What did you tell them?”
“That you physically assaulted a teacher.”
“That’s not the whole story.”
“It is the part that requires immediate action.”
“You’re not going to tell them she hit me?”
Sloan’s lips flattened.
“There is currently no evidence Mrs. Harper struck you.”
Jayden lifted his palm.
“This is evidence.”
“It could have occurred in many ways.”
Officer Grant looked at Sloan.
“Meredith.”
She ignored him.
Jayden remembered the paper on Mrs. Harper’s desk.
“What was she doing with my parents’ address?”
Sloan stopped writing.
“What?”
“There was a paper on her desk. It had COLE and 412 Harbor Street.”
“That could be a student contact sheet.”
“No. It had something else.”
“What?”
Jayden closed his eyes, trying to remember.
He had only seen it for two seconds.
Numbers.
A logo.
A blue line at the top.
Then the words came back.
NORTHGATE REDEVELOPMENT PARTNERS.
“I know what I saw.”
Sloan’s expression barely changed.
But Officer Grant noticed.
“What did you see?” he asked.
Before Jayden could answer, someone knocked frantically.
A girl stepped into the doorway.
Maya Torres.
She sat two rows behind Jayden in math.
She looked terrified.
“Principal Sloan?”
“You should be in class.”
“I recorded it.”
The room went silent.
Jayden stood.
“What?”
Maya held up her phone.
“I recorded Mrs. Harper.”
Principal Sloan moved first.
“Give me the phone.”
Maya pulled it toward her chest.
“No.”
“You recorded inside a classroom without permission.”
“She hit him!”
“Maya, hand me the device.”
Officer Grant stepped between them.
“Let her talk.”
Maya looked at him.
“I started recording because Mrs. Harper had already made Jayden kneel. I thought she was going to embarrass him again.”
“Again?” Grant asked.
Maya nodded.
“She does stuff to him all the time.”
Principal Sloan’s voice sharpened.
“That is enough.”
Maya ignored her.
“The video has the ruler. It has what she said about his parents.”
Jayden felt something inside him loosen.
Proof.
Actual proof.
“Show him.”
Maya unlocked the phone.
Principal Sloan reached for it.
Officer Grant blocked her hand.
“Meredith.”
“This is a school disciplinary matter.”
“It may also involve an adult striking a student.”
The principal stared at him.
Something passed between them.
Something Jayden could not understand.
Maya pressed play.
The video shook slightly.
Jayden appeared on the screen, kneeling.
Mrs. Harper stood over him.
The ruler rose.
The camera briefly dipped behind another student’s shoulder.
Then came the crack.
The phone lifted again.
Jayden’s face twisted for half a second.
Then Mrs. Harper’s voice came clearly through the speaker.
“Your parents are nothing but fish sellers. No wonder you always smell like fish.”
Officer Grant’s jaw tightened.
Principal Sloan went pale.
“There,” Jayden said.
The video continued.
Jayden stood.
His slap was clearly visible.
Then his words.
Then Officer Grant’s entrance.
And then something even more important.
Mrs. Harper did not begin crying immediately after Jayden struck her.
She stood furious for almost three seconds.
Only when Officer Grant appeared did she cover her cheek and begin sobbing.
Officer Grant looked at Principal Sloan.
“You were about to suspend him based on her statement without checking witnesses.”
“I was handling an urgent situation.”
Maya lowered her phone.
Then she said something that changed everything again.
“That’s not the only video.”
Jayden looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Maya’s eyes shifted toward the door.
“Mrs. Harper met somebody in the parking lot yesterday.”
Principal Sloan’s face went completely still.
Maya continued.
“I was waiting for my mom. I saw Mrs. Harper talking to a man beside a black SUV.”
Officer Grant asked, “Why did you record that?”
“Because they were arguing.”
“About what?”
Maya swallowed.
“I couldn’t hear everything.”
She looked at Jayden.
“But I heard your last name.”
Principal Sloan stepped forward.
“Maya, give me the phone.”
This time her voice was not administrative.
It was frightened.
Maya backed away.
Officer Grant raised a hand.
“Nobody touches that device.”
The principal’s face hardened.
“You are school security, Grant. You do not run this building.”
“No,” he said quietly. “But I know what evidence looks like.”
Maya opened the second video.
A black SUV filled the screen.
Mrs. Harper stood beside it.
A man wearing a gray suit faced her.
The audio was weak.
But one sentence came through.
“If Cole refuses the offer again, we need another way to pressure him.”
Jayden stopped breathing.
Mrs. Harper answered.
“What do you want me to do about his kid?”
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Jayden realized something.
May you like
Principal Sloan was no longer looking surprised.
She was looking caught.
