Chapter 16 - The Market Without a Back Door

The proposed traffic redesign looked boring.

That was why it was dangerous.

One curb.

One delivery lane.

One access restriction.

If approved, refrigerated trucks could no longer reach the market’s rear loading area during business hours.

Cole Harbor Seafood would survive weeks.

Maybe months.

Not years.

Victor wanted to fight immediately.

Rachel told him they needed a land-use attorney.

“We cannot turn every conflict into one case.”

Elena agreed.

Victor hated hearing it.

But this time, he listened.

The family hired Samuel Ortiz, a local attorney specializing in property and municipal hearings.

Samuel studied the plans.

“They claim this is about pedestrian safety.”

“It’s about forcing us out.”

“Maybe. But we beat the application by proving the stated plan is unreasonable, inconsistent or improperly motivated.”

Jayden asked, “So the truth isn’t enough?”

Samuel smiled sadly.

“The truth still needs a legal doorway.”

At school, Mrs. Harper resigned before her termination hearing.

The district did not accept the resignation as ending its investigation.

Her teaching license was referred to the state education authorities for review.

Jayden felt no joy.

He had imagined he would.

Instead, he remembered her standing above him with the ruler.

He wanted that memory gone.

Punishment did not erase it.

Maya understood.

“You thought winning would make it feel finished.”

“Yeah.”

“It doesn’t?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Maybe finished comes later.”

Meanwhile, Principal Sloan’s attorney argued she had merely followed recommendations from consultants and had never authorized targeting children.

Then investigators recovered deleted text messages from her district-issued phone backup.

One message to Mrs. Harper read:

Keep Cole contained until after Thursday’s property session.

Another:

We cannot have Victor making noise at the board again.

The meaning was no longer vague.

Sloan had connected Jayden directly to his father’s political opposition.

The superintendent recommended termination proceedings.

For the first time, the institution was not merely apologizing.

It was acting.
