Chapter 13 - Jayden Returns

After two weeks, Jayden returned to school.
Not cleared.
Not condemned.
The investigation continued.
His temporary suspension became a shorter disciplinary consequence for striking Mrs. Harper, with the district acknowledging significant adult misconduct and provocation.
Some students thought that was unfair.
Jayden did not.
He had hit her.
He would not become Mrs. Harper and pretend his own action disappeared because someone else behaved worse.
When he walked into school, dozens of students watched.
Maya met him at his locker.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
He smiled.
For the first time in weeks.
Officer Grant passed them.
Jayden nodded.
Grant nodded back.
No speeches.
In social studies, a substitute teacher placed a ruler on the desk.
Jayden froze.
His palm tingled.
The teacher noticed.
She quietly moved the ruler into a drawer.
No one said anything.
That small act nearly broke him.
Later, the district superintendent announced that Principal Sloan was now on administrative leave.
Parents cheered outside the school.
Jayden did not.
He knew investigations were not convictions.
Rachel had taught him that.
Facts first.
Consequences second.
That afternoon, a district investigator interviewed Jayden.
“Do you believe Mrs. Harper wanted you removed from school?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because my family wouldn’t sell.”
“Did she ever say that directly?”
“No.”
“Then how do you know?”
Jayden took a breath.
“I know what happened. I don’t know everything she intended.”
Rachel smiled slightly.
That answer mattered.
He was learning the difference between truth and the story anger wanted to tell.
Then the investigator showed him a photograph.
A handwritten list from Mrs. Harper’s desk.
Six student names.
Beside five were property addresses.
Beside Jayden’s name:

COLE — FATHER STILL REFUSING.
There was no longer any question that his family’s property had entered his classroom.
