Chapter 12 - Adrian’s Line in the Sand

Adrian asked to meet Jayden alone.
Victor refused.
They met with Rachel present.
Adrian looked exhausted.
“I can give you Voss.”
Victor crossed his arms.
“Why?”
“Because he’s cutting me out.”
Nobody spoke.
Adrian admitted Northgate had promised him exclusive brokerage rights for the Harbor acquisitions.
Once controversy began, Voss blamed him.
“He says I acted independently.”
Rachel asked, “Did you?”
“Not completely.”
“What does that mean?”
Adrian handed her a flash drive.
Emails.
Commission schedules.
Committee notes.
One message from Voss was especially damaging:
Use school contacts to encourage voluntary movement before formal acquisition.
Another from Adrian replied:
Harper has relationships with several families.
Victor stood.
“You knew.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You knew children were being used.”
“I thought it meant conversations.”
“You knew enough to ask no questions.”
Adrian’s eyes dropped.
That was the truth.
Rachel asked about the Cole property.
Adrian admitted he had pressured Victor’s finances intentionally.
He delayed depositing one payment until after a default deadline so he could claim enhanced rights.
Victor lunged forward.
Rachel stepped between them.
“Do not.”
Victor stopped.
Adrian did not move.
“You wanted my company.”
“I wanted what Dad should have left me.”
“There it is.”
The betrayal was older than Northgate.
Older than Jayden.
Adrian had resented Victor for twenty years.
Northgate simply found the wound and paid it.
Adrian agreed to provide a sworn statement.
It would not erase what he had done.
But it could help expose the larger scheme.
When the meeting ended, Jayden stayed behind.
“Why did you do it?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Because I spent so long believing your father had taken something from me that I stopped caring who I hurt trying to get it back.”
Jayden thought of his slap.

Anger could feel like justice.
Until it became permission.
