Chapter 4 - The Deal Behind the School

By that evening, nobody in the Cole house was speaking normally.

Victor sat at the kitchen table with the old loan agreement.

Elena stood by the sink.

Jayden remained near the doorway.

The papers between his parents seemed more dangerous than Mrs. Harper’s ruler.

Elena tapped one paragraph.

“This says Adrian receives an additional thirty percent interest if the company defaults for more than ninety days.”

Victor nodded.

“And are we in default?”

“Not technically.”

“Technically?”

“I made the last payment twelve days late.”

Elena stared at him.

“Victor.”

“I made it.”

“After Adrian sent notice?”

Victor did not answer.

Jayden knew what silence meant now.

Elena pulled out her phone.

“Call him.”

Victor looked up.

“Elena—”

“Call your brother.”

Adrian answered on the fourth ring.

“What?”

Victor put the phone on speaker.

“Did you sign an agreement with Northgate?”

Silence.

Then Adrian sighed.

“You finally saw it.”

Elena’s face went white.

Victor gripped the table.

“You had no authority.”

“I have equity.”

“You do not own the real estate.”

“I own enough of the company to stop you from destroying what’s left.”

“You tried to sell our market.”

“I tried to save it.”

Jayden stared at the phone.

The same phrase his father had used.

Save it.

Everybody seemed capable of betraying somebody when they called it saving them.

Victor asked, “Why did Graham Voss talk to Jayden’s teacher?”

Another pause.

“I don’t know.”

“Don’t lie.”

“I don’t know what Voss does at that school.”

Elena leaned toward the phone.

“Why is Northgate involved with a school expansion committee?”

Adrian’s voice changed.

“You need to stop asking questions.”

Victor stood.

“What does that mean?”

“It means take the offer.”

“Why?”

“Because if you don’t, you may lose the market without getting half a million dollars.”

The call ended.

Victor immediately called back.

No answer.

Jayden stared at him.

“Dad?”

Victor looked older than he had that morning.

“He knows something.”

Elena folded the loan agreement.

“So do you.”

Victor did not argue.

The next morning, the Coles met education attorney Rachel Kim.

Maya’s mother had recommended her after seeing the video.

Rachel watched both recordings twice.

Then she said, “Do not post these online.”

Jayden frowned.

“Why?”

“Because right now they are evidence, not entertainment.”

She looked at Victor.

“The school will investigate Jayden’s slap separately from Mrs. Harper’s conduct. That is normal.”

“So he could still be suspended?”

“Yes.”

Jayden looked down.

Rachel continued.

“Provocation matters. Adult misconduct matters. The sequence matters. But Jayden should not expect the district to say striking a teacher was acceptable.”

“I know,” Jayden muttered.

Rachel turned toward him.

“Good. Owning your mistake will make people listen when you talk about hers.”

Then she addressed the bigger issue.

“The Northgate material is not a school discipline question anymore.”

Victor told her everything.

The offers.

Adrian’s loan.

The expansion committee.

Principal Sloan’s name.

Rachel stopped him there.

“What expansion?”

Victor shrugged.

Rachel opened her laptop.

Five minutes later, she found a district agenda from four months earlier.

The school board had authorized a feasibility study for an athletic and technology annex.

The proposed access route ran toward Harbor Street.

Elena leaned closer.

“Through our block?”

Rachel nodded.

“And Northgate?”

The district had hired a planning consultant.

Northgate Redevelopment Partners.

Victor stared at the screen.

“So Northgate wants our lot for its private project and gets paid by the school district to study expansion next door?”

“It appears so.”

“That’s insane.”

“It may be a conflict. It may not be illegal by itself.”

Jayden asked, “Where does Mrs. Harper fit?”

Rachel searched again.

There it was.

Harbor School Expansion Community Advisory Committee.

Member:

Patricia Harper.

Principal liaison:

Meredith Sloan.

Another name appeared beneath them.

Adrian Cole.

Victor went completely still.

Elena whispered, “Your brother?”

Jayden felt the story rearranging itself.

Mrs. Harper had not simply known about his family’s property.

His uncle sat on the same committee.

His teacher sat on the committee.

His principal represented the school.

And Northgate ran the study.

Rachel printed the page.

“This is the first thing we preserve.”

Jayden looked at his father.

“Why would Uncle Adrian be on a school committee?”

Victor’s answer came slowly.

“Because he used to volunteer for the district.”

“No.”

Elena shook her head.

“He joined after Northgate made its first offer.”

Victor checked the dates.

She was right.

Rachel leaned back.

“The question is no longer whether these people know each other.”

May you like

She placed the printed committee list beside Maya’s video still.

“The question is what they agreed to do.”
