Chapter 11 - The Morning Visit

Victor remembered.

Mrs. Harper had entered the market asking for fish.

Nothing unusual.

At least that was what he had believed.

“She bought nothing,” he said.

Jayden stared at him.

“Then why was she there?”

“She asked whether we owned the building.”

Elena turned.

“You never told me.”

Victor closed his eyes.

Another omission.

Another small secret that now looked enormous.

Mrs. Harper had claimed she loved old waterfront businesses.

She asked if Victor would ever sell.

Victor told her no.

Then she asked something stranger.

“What if staying hurt Jayden?”

Victor assumed she meant the neighborhood.

Crime.

Traffic.

School changes.

“I told her Jayden was happy here.”

Jayden felt cold.

“She was warning you.”

“I didn’t know.”

The anonymous sender finally identified himself.

Evan Brooks.

Former assistant principal.

He had resigned six months earlier.

Rachel met him privately.

Evan explained that Principal Sloan had pressured him to approve disciplinary transfers.

He refused.

Soon after, he was accused of mishandling student records.

Rather than endure a public fight, he resigned.

“I should have fought,” he said.

“Why didn’t you?” Jayden asked.

“I had a newborn. A mortgage. I was scared.”

Jayden looked at him.

Adults kept disappointing him in ordinary ways.

Not because they were monsters.

Because fear made them quiet.

Evan had preserved emails.

One from Sloan to Mrs. Harper read:

We need stability before the property vote. Avoid incidents that attract media.

Another from Harper replied:

Cole boy remains confrontational. Family is still refusing.

Victor’s hands shook.

There it was.

Not proof of every detail.

But direct evidence Jayden’s behavior and the family’s property position were being discussed together.

Rachel asked Evan why he had waited.

“Because I saw the video.”

He looked at Jayden.

“I watched that woman make herself the victim.”

His voice cracked.

“And I realized that silence had made me part of it.”
