Chapter 21 - The Woman Liam Called a MonsterThe hearing attracted reporters.

Sophia entered through a side entrance.
Daniel walked beside her.
Liam stayed home with Emma.
That had been Sophia’s decision.
A child did not need a courthouse to prove loyalty.
Inside, prosecutors described the payment trail.
The access records.
Arthur’s recording.
Ross Mercer’s testimony.
Eleanor sat at the defense table.
For one brief moment, she looked less like a powerful matriarch and more like an old woman facing consequences.
Sophia felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
During a recess, Eleanor asked to speak with her.
Sophia refused at first.
Then changed her mind.
They met with attorneys present.
Eleanor looked at Sophia’s uncovered scars.
“I suppose you enjoy this.”
“No.”
“Watching me destroyed.”
“No.”
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“You won.”
Sophia shook her head.
“This was never a game.”
“You took my son.”
“Daniel left because of what you did.”
“You turned Liam against me.”
Sophia’s expression hardened.
“No.”
She leaned forward.
“You used a seven-year-old child to punish his mother.”
Eleanor looked away.
“You made him believe these scars meant I hurt him.”
“I wanted him to question you.”
“You wanted him to fear me.”
Silence.
Sophia continued.
“You know what he asked me?”
Eleanor said nothing.
“He asked whether I saved him so I could own him.”
For the first time, Eleanor’s face cracked.
“That wasn’t supposed to—”
“No.”
Sophia’s voice sharpened.
“You don’t get to finish that sentence.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
Sophia did not comfort her.
“When Liam is older, he will decide whether he wants a relationship with you.”
“You’re keeping him from me.”
“Right now, yes.”
Eleanor looked stunned.
Sophia continued.
“Not forever. Not as revenge. Until professionals believe contact is safe for him.”
“You think I’m dangerous?”
“I think you taught a child to hate his mother because you were afraid of losing power.”
Eleanor looked down.
Sophia stood.
“I hope someday you understand what that cost him.”
She left.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Sophia did not answer.
Daniel opened the car door.
Inside, her phone displayed a message from Emma.
A photograph.
Liam sitting at the kitchen table with the melted dinosaur beside him.
Under the picture Emma had written:
He says it’s proof monsters aren’t always what they look like.
Sophia laughed.
Daniel looked over.
“What?”
She showed him.
Daniel smiled.
Then Sophia’s phone rang.
Liam.
She answered.
“Hi.”
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Did Grandma go to jail?”
“Not today.”
“Oh.”
A pause.
“Did you see her?”
“Yes.”
“Was she mean?”
Sophia thought carefully.
“She was sad.”
“Are you sad?”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“Can we go swimming tomorrow?”
Sophia’s breath caught.
They had not used the pool since the party.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Liam’s answer was simple.
“Because I don’t want the worst thing that happened there to be the last thing.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
Daniel looked at her.
She smiled.
“Okay.”
May you like
The next afternoon, for the first time since her son pushed her into the water to expose her, Sophia Carter would return to the edge of the pool.
And this time, Liam would be waiting for her.
