Chapter 16 - Eleanor’s ConfessionEleanor asked to meet Daniel alone.

He brought Sophia.

His mother almost refused to open the door.

They met in the library of the Carter estate.

No lawyers.

No staff.

No cameras.

Eleanor poured herself tea.

“You’ve already given the police Arthur’s recording.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed your father’s reputation.”

Daniel stared.

“My father did that himself.”

Eleanor looked at Sophia.

“This is what you wanted.”

Sophia sat calmly.

“No.”

“What did you want?”

“An audit.”

Eleanor laughed.

“So righteous.”

“Six million dollars meant for families who needed homes.”

“We built homes.”

“Not with the money you stole.”

Eleanor slammed the teacup down.

“I kept that foundation alive through three recessions!”

Daniel leaned forward.

“With stolen money?”

“With money moved temporarily.”

“Into your personal investments.”

“To protect assets.”

Sophia shook her head.

“You still think naming a crime differently changes it.”

Eleanor’s eyes flashed.

“You know nothing about what it takes to preserve a family.”

Sophia touched her scar.

“I know more than I wanted to.”

Daniel asked:

“Did you order Ross to cut the brake line?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“No.”

“Did you order him to touch Sophia’s vehicle?”

Silence.

“Mom.”

“I told him to retrieve documents.”

“From the car?”

“Yes.”

“What documents?”

“Her audit notes.”

Sophia stared.

“So you sent a security man into my car.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were about to accuse the Foundation of theft based on incomplete information.”

“The information was correct.”

Eleanor ignored her.

Daniel continued.

“Did you tell Ross to make sure Sophia couldn’t attend the board meeting?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

That was enough.

Daniel stood.

“What did you say?”

“Daniel—”

“What did you say?”

Eleanor’s voice cracked for the first time.

“I said delay her.”

Sophia went still.

“How?”

“I didn’t specify.”

“You paid him forty-eight thousand dollars.”

“I paid him for several services.”

“You told him to delay me.”

“I never told him to cause a crash.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You knew afterward.”

“Yes.”

“And you let Dad bury it.”

“I was protecting everyone.”

“Liam almost died!”

“I didn’t know he would be in the car!”

The room went silent.

Eleanor realized what she had admitted.

Sophia slowly stood.

“There it is.”

Eleanor’s face drained.

Sophia’s voice remained quiet.

“You expected me to be in that car.”

“I expected no one to be hurt.”

“You expected something to happen to me.”

“I wanted time.”

“You wanted silence.”

Eleanor turned to Daniel.

“Your father understood.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“My father was a coward.”

She slapped him.

The sound cracked through the library.

Daniel did not move.

Sophia stepped between them.

Eleanor’s hand fell.

Daniel looked at his mother with a sadness deeper than anger.

“You used my son against his mother.”

“I wanted him safe.”

“You wanted Sophia isolated.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“She was taking you away from us.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He opened the library door.

“You drove me away yourself.”

Outside, two detectives waited.

Daniel had not come for a private reconciliation.

He had come wearing a recording device at his attorney’s advice.

Eleanor looked past him.

Her face changed.

“You recorded me?”

Daniel’s eyes stayed on hers.

“For once, Mom, I learned something from this family.”

May you like

He stepped aside.

“I kept evidence.”
