Chapter 11 - The BoardroomThe Carter Foundation board met at seven.

Sophia arrived at six fifty-eight.
No heavy scar concealer.
Only ordinary makeup.
The ridges along her cheek were visible.
Several board members stared.
Sophia let them.
Eleanor sat at the head of the table.
Daniel took a seat beside Sophia.
That surprised his mother.
“You’re not a voting member tonight,” Eleanor said.
“I’m aware.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To listen.”
Sophia placed a folder on the table.
Eleanor saw it.
Her expression barely changed.
The meeting began.
Eleanor spoke for nine minutes about reputation.
About donor confidence.
About the pool incident.
About Liam.
Then she looked at Sophia.
“Your private family difficulties have become a liability.”
Sophia nodded.
“Are you finished?”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.
“For now.”
Sophia stood.
“Six years ago, this foundation began paying millions of dollars to shell vendors.”
Silence.
Eleanor sat back.
“This is not on the agenda.”
“It is now.”
Sophia distributed documents.
“Six point four million dollars.”
A board member frowned.
“What is this?”
“Money designated for affordable housing.”
Another member asked:
“Where did it go?”
“We are still tracing it.”
Eleanor interrupted.
“These accusations are irresponsible.”
Sophia continued.
“One vendor paid forty-eight thousand dollars to Mercer Risk Consulting three days before my family’s car crash.”
A man at the far end looked up.
“Ross Mercer?”
“Yes.”
Daniel watched his mother.
Eleanor remained still.
Sophia placed Mason Hale’s photographs on the screen.
“This is the original inspection.”
A severed brake line filled the display.
Someone whispered:
“My God.”
Eleanor stood.
“This meeting is adjourned.”
“No,” said the vice-chairman.
Eleanor turned.
He continued.
“Sit down.”
For the first time, she did not control the room.
Sophia looked at her.
“I spent five years believing I was unlucky.”
Eleanor stared back.
“You have no evidence I touched your vehicle.”
“No.”
Sophia’s voice remained calm.
“But I have evidence that someone paid your security director shortly before somebody did.”
Daniel added:
“And my father’s notes say you discussed the matter with him.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
“You went through Arthur’s files?”
“Yes.”
“You had no right.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Neither did you.”
The board voted to suspend Eleanor pending an independent forensic audit.
Nine in favor.
Two against.
Eleanor did not speak as she gathered her papers.
Before leaving, she stopped beside Sophia.
“This family gave you everything.”
Sophia looked directly at her.
“No.”
She touched the scar on her cheek.
“This family took enough.”
Eleanor left.
Daniel exhaled.
Sophia looked at the clock.
8:21 p.m.
Liam was waiting at home.
She had promised him the truth.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
It was Emma.
He answered.
Her voice was frantic.
“Sir, Mrs. Carter is here.”
Daniel looked toward the door Eleanor had just exited.
“What?”
“Your mother.”
“That’s impossible. She just left.”
Emma lowered her voice.
“She called Liam.”
Sophia stood.
Emma continued.
“He opened the side gate.”
May you like
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
“And she says she’s taking him home with her.”
