Chapter 19 - What the Scars MeantSophia took Liam to the pool house on a Saturday morning.

They sat on the floor beside the old box.
She placed the melted dinosaur between them.
“Why did you keep it?” Liam asked.
“I almost threw it away.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Sophia picked it up.
“Because I hated it.”
Liam looked confused.
“It reminded me of the worst night of my life.”
“Then why keep it?”
“Because it also reminded me we survived.”
She handed it to him.
“One object can mean two things.”
Liam turned the toy over.
Half of its green body was warped black.
The other half still looked like a dinosaur.
“Like your face?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Yes.”
He immediately looked guilty.
“Was that rude?”
“No.”
Sophia touched her scar.
“For a long time, I looked at this and saw pain.”
“What do you see now?”
She thought.
“Proof.”
“That you saved me?”
“That I survived too.”
Liam nodded.
Then he held up the silver bracelet.
“And this?”
“You gave it to me.”
“I did?”
“You were two.”
“With what money?”
Sophia laughed.
“Your father’s.”
Daniel called from the doorway:
“I financed many of your early romantic gestures.”
Liam smiled.
Sophia turned the bracelet over.
Inside, barely visible beneath the damage, were engraved words:
MOMMY + LIAM
Liam stared.
“I picked that?”
“You pointed at it in a jewelry store until your father surrendered.”
Daniel raised his hands.
“I was outnumbered.”
Liam traced the engraving.
Then his expression changed.
“You were already my mom.”
Sophia blinked.
“What?”
“When the fire happened.”
“Yes.”
“So you didn’t save me because you wanted me to call you Mom.”
“No.”
The anonymous note had left deeper damage than she realized.
Liam looked at her.
“You didn’t save me so I would owe you.”
“No.”
“Then Grandma’s note was completely wrong.”
“Yes.”
He was silent.
Then he asked:
“Why would she tell me that?”
Sophia answered carefully.
“Because if you distrusted me, it would hurt your father and me.”
“Why did she want that?”
“Because people who are afraid of losing power sometimes try to separate people who are stronger together.”
Liam absorbed that.
“Is that why she hated you?”
“I don’t think hate is the whole story.”
“What is?”
“Fear. Pride. Control.”
“That sounds like hate with extra steps.”
Daniel coughed to hide a laugh.
Sophia gave him a look.
Liam smiled.
Then he became serious.
“Can I keep the dinosaur?”
Sophia hesitated.
“Yes.”
“What about the bracelet?”
She held it.
“I think I want that.”
“Okay.”
He stood.
At the door, he turned.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“If somebody asks what happened to your face, what should I say?”
Sophia smiled.
“You should say it’s my story.”
“And if you want me to tell them?”
“I’ll tell you.”
He nodded.
Then disappeared into the house.
Daniel remained.
“He’s seven going on forty.”
“He’s seven.”
Sophia looked at the bracelet.
“He deserves to stay seven awhile.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“Do you?”
“Do I what?”
“Want to stay married to me?”
The question had waited for weeks.
Sophia did not answer immediately.
“I want to try.”
Daniel exhaled.
“That’s more than I deserve.”
“Stop turning everything into debt.”
He looked at her.
May you like
She lifted the damaged bracelet.
“We’ve had enough of that.”
