Chapter 15 - Arthur Carter’s Last SecretDaniel found the recording inside an old dictation archive.

His father had recorded everything.

Board notes.

Reminders.

Private thoughts intended for later transcription.

One file had never been transferred.

Date: March 18, five years earlier.

Four days after the crash.

Arthur’s voice filled Daniel’s office.

“Eleanor insists Mercer was only instructed to retrieve Sophia’s audit material.”

Sophia stared at Daniel.

Arthur continued.

“She claims vehicle interference was not authorized.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

Neither spoke.

Then he pressed play again.

“If true, Mercer exceeded instructions. Regardless, public exposure would destroy the Foundation and possibly implicate Eleanor in the housing transfers.”

Sophia’s hands curled.

Arthur’s recorded voice became tired.

“Daniel cannot know. He will choose Sophia.”

Daniel looked away.

The recording continued.

“And if he chooses Sophia, we lose him.”

The file ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

Sophia closed the laptop.

For several seconds, there was only the hum of the air conditioner.

Finally Daniel said:

“He knew me better than I knew him.”

Sophia looked at him.

“He knew you would do the right thing.”

“No.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“He knew I might.”

That distinction mattered.

His father had not protected Daniel.

He had managed him.

Sophia sat beside him.

“What happens now?”

“We give it to the police.”

“No family meeting?”

“No.”

“No private negotiation?”

“No.”

“No lawyers calling Eleanor first?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No more protecting them from consequences.”

Sophia nodded.

For the first time since discovering his signature on the confidentiality agreement, some of the distance between them softened.

Not disappeared.

Softened.

Upstairs, Liam was making something.

At dinner, he placed a folded piece of paper beside Sophia’s plate.

“What’s this?”

“Homework.”

“You don’t have homework today.”

“I made homework.”

Sophia opened it.

At the top Liam had written:

THINGS I KNOW NOW

Mom did not start the fire.

Mom saved me.

Grandma lied to me.

Dad kept secrets.

I pushed Mom.

Being sorry does not erase something.

I can do better anyway.

Sophia read the list twice.

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

His eyes became wet.

Sophia pointed to number four.

“Dad kept secrets?”

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Accurate.”

Liam looked at Sophia.

“Dr. Levin says writing facts helps when my brain makes scary stories.”

“She’s right.”

“I have one question.”

“What?”

“Is Grandma going to jail?”

Daniel and Sophia exchanged a glance.

Daniel answered.

“We don’t know.”

“But if she did bad things?”

“Then a court decides.”

Liam frowned.

“Even rich people?”

Sophia almost laughed.

“They’re supposed to.”

“That doesn’t sound like yes.”

Daniel sighed.

“Welcome to adulthood.”

Sophia kicked him lightly beneath the table.

For the first time in weeks, Liam smiled.

Then his expression became serious again.

“Do I have to forgive Grandma?”

Sophia looked at him.

“No.”

Daniel added:

“You also don’t have to decide today.”

Liam nodded.

Then he looked at Sophia’s uncovered scars.

He did not look away.

That tiny act felt larger than an apology.
