Chapter 1 - The Monster by the PoolThe Carter mansion had been built for photographs.

White limestone. Glass walls. A turquoise pool reflecting the late-afternoon sky. Waiters moved between cocktail tables carrying champagne, while forty guests congratulated Daniel Carter on another successful fundraiser for the Carter Foundation.

Sophia stood near the pool in a cream dress, one hand wrapped around a glass of red wine.

She was smiling when her seven-year-old son walked toward her.

“Liam?” she said.

He did not answer.

The boy stopped several feet away.

Around them, conversation continued for another two seconds.

Then Liam raised his right hand and pointed directly at Sophia.

“She’s not my mom!” he shouted.

The party went silent.

Sophia’s fingers tightened around her wineglass.

Liam’s face twisted with anger.

“She’s a monster!”

A woman gasped.

Emma, the Carter family’s longtime housekeeper, hurried forward.

“Liam, don’t say things like that.”

“You don’t know!” he snapped.

“Liam.”

Daniel’s voice cut through the crowd.

He pushed past two guests, his face red with humiliation.

“That’s enough. Go inside. Now.”

He took Liam carefully by the arm.

For one moment, Liam allowed himself to be turned toward the house.

Then he saw Sophia.

Her face was still perfect.

Smooth skin.

Elegant makeup.

The same beautiful face she wore every morning.

The face Liam had recently become convinced was a lie.

He pulled free.

“Liam!”

The boy ran.

Sophia barely had time to lower her glass.

Liam reached her, extended both hands and shoved.

The wineglass slipped from Sophia’s fingers.

She stumbled backward.

Then she fell into the pool.

A violent splash rose above the deck.

Several guests screamed.

Daniel froze.

Sophia resurfaced.

And everything changed.

Water streamed across her face.

The special concealer she had spent years learning to apply began to dissolve. The carefully layered cosmetic material around her left cheek and jaw loosened.

Dark pink ridges appeared beneath it.

Then pale, uneven tissue.

Old burn scars ran from her temple, across her cheek, and down toward her neck.

Sophia touched her face.

Her expression collapsed.

“No…”

The word was barely audible.

Guests stared.

One woman covered her mouth.

Another looked away.

Emma stood motionless.

Sophia raised both hands to hide herself.

Then Daniel moved.

He threw off his jacket and jumped into the pool.

He reached Sophia and wrapped his arms around her.

She pressed her face against his chest.

Daniel looked over her shoulder.

Liam was standing at the edge.

And smiling.

He believed he had won.

He believed the water had revealed the monster.

“See?” Liam said breathlessly. “I told you.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Not embarrassment.

Not shock.

Something Liam had never seen directed at him before.

Fury.

“Liam! Go to your room!”

The smile remained on Liam’s face until Daniel finished speaking.

Then it vanished.

“Dad?”

“Now.”

Liam looked around.

No one was congratulating him.

Emma looked horrified.

Guests were whispering.

His father was holding Sophia as if she were the person who needed protection.

And Sophia was crying.

Liam’s confidence weakened.

“But you don’t understand.”

Daniel stared at him.

Liam’s voice became smaller.

“She lied.”

Daniel said nothing.

Emma guided Liam toward the mansion.

This time he did not resist.

Behind him, Sophia climbed from the pool wrapped in Daniel’s jacket.

She never once looked toward her son.

That hurt Liam more than anger would have.

Twenty minutes later, he sat alone on his bedroom floor.

The party downstairs had ended.

Through his window, he watched expensive cars disappear through the front gates.

He opened the bottom drawer of his desk.

Beneath a stack of comic books lay a brown envelope.

Inside were three photographs.

The first showed Sophia five years earlier.

Her face was bandaged.

The second showed a burned black SUV beside a highway guardrail.

The third showed a newspaper clipping.

CARTER FAMILY SURVIVES MYSTERIOUS VEHICLE FIRE.

Someone had circled one sentence in red ink.

Investigators declined to identify the passenger believed to have been closest to the origin of the fire.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written four words:

ASK WHAT YOUR MOTHER DID.

Liam stared at it.

Then he heard footsteps outside his bedroom.

He quickly hid the envelope.

The door opened.

Daniel entered alone.

His shirt was still wet.

For several seconds, father and son looked at each other.

Finally Daniel asked:

“Who gave you those photographs?”

Liam’s stomach tightened.

He had never shown them to anyone.

“How do you know about the photographs?”

May you like

Daniel stopped.

And Liam realized his father was hiding something too.
