Chapter 13 - The Person in the Back SeatSophia told Liam everything except the conspiracy.

That part belonged to adults and investigators.

But the fire belonged to him too.

“Your father tried to stop the car,” she said.

Liam sat very still.

“He couldn’t?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“We hit the barrier.”

Daniel sat across from them.

His eyes remained on the floor.

“The car turned sideways,” Sophia continued. “I hit my head.”

“Did Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Was I hurt?”

“Not badly.”

“Then the fire started?”

Sophia nodded.

Liam’s hands tightened around his blanket.

“I remember smoke.”

“I know.”

“Did you get out?”

“Yes.”

Liam looked at her.

“Then how…”

Sophia’s voice weakened.

“I heard you crying.”

Liam stopped breathing.

“The back door wouldn’t open.”

She saw the memory not as images, but sensations.

Heat.

Metal.

A child screaming.

Daniel unconscious against the steering wheel.

The taste of blood.

“I broke the rear window.”

“With what?”

“I don’t remember.”

She did.

A tire iron.

But that detail did not matter.

“I reached inside.”

Liam’s eyes moved to her cheek.

“The fire was already inside the car.”

“Yes.”

“You went back?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Sophia stared at him.

“Because you were there.”

The boy’s mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Daniel covered his face with one hand.

Sophia continued.

“My sleeve caught fire. The side of my face was burned. But I got your seat belt loose.”

Liam began shaking his head.

“No.”

“It’s okay.”

“No.”

“You asked for the truth.”

“No!”

He jumped from the bed.

“You’re lying!”

Sophia stayed seated.

“Why would I lie about this?”

“Because…”

He could not finish.

Because if Sophia was telling the truth, the entire world Liam had built over the past six weeks collapsed.

The monster had not trapped him in the car.

The monster had gone into the fire.

For him.

He looked at Daniel.

“Is it true?”

Daniel’s eyes were wet.

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel’s answer came painfully.

“Because your mother didn’t want you to feel like you owed her anything.”

Liam turned to Sophia.

“What?”

She stood slowly.

“You don’t owe me love.”

“But you saved me.”

“I’m your mother.”

“You could have died.”

“Yes.”

“Because of me.”

“No.”

The word was sharp.

Sophia stepped closer.

“Not because of you.”

“But if I wasn’t in the car—”

“Stop.”

She knelt in front of him.

“This is why I didn’t want to tell you.”

Liam’s tears spilled.

“You were a child in danger. You did nothing wrong.”

He looked at her scars.

“Why did you hide them?”

Sophia answered honestly.

“Partly because you were frightened when you were little.”

“And the other part?”

She hesitated.

“Because I was frightened too.”

“Of me?”

“Of everyone.”

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t know how people would look at me.”

Liam remembered the pool.

The guests.

His laughter.

His mother covering her face.

He began crying harder.

“I laughed.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“I pushed you.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

She did not immediately say it was okay.

Because it was not.

Instead she said:

“I believe you’re sorry.”

Liam looked confused.

“Aren’t you supposed to forgive me?”

“Forgiveness isn’t magic.”

She touched his hand.

“You hurt me. We’re going to work through that.”

Liam nodded.

Then asked the question Sophia had feared most.

“Did Grandma know you saved me?”

Daniel looked toward Sophia.

Sophia answered:

“I don’t know.”

Downstairs, Daniel’s phone received an email from the forensic accountant.
