Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind the Perfect MarriageVanessa met Claire Donnelly in a private conference room.

Her attorney placed several documents on the table.

"The security footage is devastating."

Vanessa stared toward the window.

"I know."

"The financial records are also serious."

"I know."

"Then stop saying you know and tell me everything."

Vanessa looked at her.

Claire continued.

"If I'm going to represent you, I need the truth. Not the version you tell Daniel. Not the version you tell Adrian. The truth."

Vanessa's expression became defensive.

"Adrian manipulated me."

"Maybe. What did you do?"

Vanessa said nothing.

Claire slid a recovered message across the table.

If Sofia is blamed for a safety incident...

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Did you plan to push Emma?"

"No."

"Then what did you plan?"

"I wanted Sofia gone."

"How?"

"I thought Emma could have some minor accident."

Claire's face hardened.

"A minor accident?"

"A scraped knee. A fall. Something."

"And Sofia would be blamed?"

"Yes."

"Why Halloween?"

"There were guests. Confusion."

Claire stared.

"Did Adrian tell you to do this?"

"No."

"Did he know?"

"He knew I wanted Sofia removed."

"That's not what I asked."

Vanessa looked down.

"No. He didn't know about Emma."

Claire made a note.

"Why Sofia?"

Vanessa gave the answer she had repeated for months.

"She interfered in my family."

Claire waited.

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Emma wanted her for everything."

"Emma was two."

"I know how old my daughter is."

"Apparently you forgot what that means."

Vanessa stared at her attorney.

Claire did not apologize.

"Anything else?"

Vanessa looked toward the documents.

"She overheard things."

"Bellmont?"

"Yes."

"Did you fear she would tell Daniel?"

"Eventually."

"So you had financial and personal reasons to remove her."

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

"What happened by the pool?"

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"I was angry."

"That is not enough."

"Emma brought me that stupid bracelet."

Claire watched carefully.

"Why did that matter?"

"Because Sofia helped her make it."

"And?"

"Everything was Sofia."

Her voice cracked.

"If Emma cried, Sofia. If Emma woke up, Sofia. If she wanted food, Sofia. Even the gift she gave me had Sofia in it."

Claire remained silent.

Vanessa continued.

"I looked at Emma and thought, just once, I wanted her to understand that she couldn't keep ignoring me."

"So you pushed her."

Vanessa nodded.

"Did you intend her to enter the water?"

Another pause.

"Yes."

Claire's face became still.

"Did you expect Sofia to rescue her?"

"I knew Sofia was nearby."

"Did you know Emma could not climb out alone?"

Vanessa cried now.

"I knew someone would help."

"Someone?"

"Sofia."

Claire leaned back.

"So you intentionally pushed your two-year-old daughter into a swimming pool believing Sofia would rescue her, and you expected that confusion might then allow you to blame Sofia."

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

"And you checked the camera blind spot the night before."

"I wanted any incident not to be recorded clearly."

"Why?"

"Because I knew it would look bad."

Claire stared at her.

"You understood enough to hide it."

Vanessa covered her face.

Claire let the silence remain.

Eventually Vanessa said, "Am I going to prison?"

Claire answered carefully.

"I cannot predict charging decisions or outcomes. But you need to understand that this is serious. So are the financial allegations."

Vanessa lowered her hands.

"What if I cooperate?"

"Cooperation may matter. It does not erase conduct."

"Adrian deserves worse."

"This is not about who deserves worse."

Claire gathered the documents.

"It is about what you did."

That night Vanessa returned to her hotel suite.

She opened a box containing photographs of Emma.

One showed the little girl on her first birthday.

Vanessa looked genuinely happy in the picture.

She tried to remember when motherhood had begun feeling like competition.

Emma had been difficult as an infant.

Daniel traveled often.

Vanessa suffered exhaustion and resentment she never admitted.

She refused offers of therapy because she believed needing help would make her look weak.

When Sofia joined the household, Emma responded immediately to her calm manner.

Vanessa initially felt relief.

Then relief became dependence.

Dependence became jealousy.

Adrian arrived during that vulnerable period.

He praised Vanessa's intelligence.

He told her Daniel underestimated her.

He encouraged her to build financial independence.

For the first time in years, Vanessa felt seen.

Then she lost money in the failed event company.

Adrian offered a way to recover it.

One compromise became another.

A misleading invoice.

A password.

A false authorization.

A payment.

Then a larger transaction.

Each step made the next easier.

Vanessa stared at Emma's photograph.

She finally understood something horrifying.

Adrian had exploited her greed.

But he had not created it.

Sofia had triggered her jealousy.

But Sofia had not created that either.

Daniel's absences had made the marriage lonely.

But loneliness had not pushed Emma.

Vanessa had.

For the first time since Halloween, she could not find anyone else to blame.

Then her phone rang.

Adrian.

She answered.

"What?"

"We have another problem."

"What now?"

"Marcus Vale is talking."

Vanessa frowned.

"Who?"

"My former compliance manager."

"What does he know?"

"Enough to prove the invoices weren't legitimate."

Vanessa stood.

"What are you going to do?"

May you like

Adrian's answer chilled her.

"That depends on whether you still have the one document that can make Daniel look involved."
