Chapter 22 - Vanessa Faces SofiaVanessa asked Claire whether she could speak with Sofia again.

Claire advised caution.

"Why?"

"I want to apologize properly."

"You already apologized."

"No. I said words in a courthouse hallway."

"What would make this different?"

Vanessa thought.

"I don't want anything from her."

Claire studied her.

"If Sofia declines, you accept that."

"Yes."

Elena brought the request to Sofia.

Sofia considered it for two days.

Then agreed to a meeting in Elena's office with both attorneys nearby but not sitting at the table.

Vanessa arrived first.

She wore simple clothing.

No jewelry.

No performance.

Sofia entered wearing the purple bracelet Emma had given her.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

Her eyes filled.

"She gave it to you."

Sofia sat.

"Yes."

Vanessa looked at the bracelet.

"I never opened the box."

"I know."

"I remember thinking it looked cheap."

Sofia's expression hardened.

Vanessa nodded.

"That is exactly the kind of thing I need to say out loud."

"Why?"

"Because I spent years pretending my cruelty was sophistication."

Sofia waited.

Vanessa took a breath.

"I blamed you because Emma loved you."

"Yes."

"I created false complaints."

"Yes."

"I let people suspect you stole my bracelet."

"Yes."

"I planned a safety incident so Daniel would fire you."

Sofia's hands tightened.

Vanessa continued.

"I did not plan exactly what happened at the pool before that moment. But I did plan to use Emma to make you look negligent."

Sofia stared.

"And when Emma brought me the gift, I became angry."

"Because I helped her make it?"

"Yes."

"Do you hear how insane that sounds?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Sofia leaned forward.

"She was two."

"I know."

"She loved you."

Vanessa began crying.

Sofia's voice rose.

"She walked toward you with a present."

"I know."

"And you punished her for loving someone else too."

Vanessa nodded.

Sofia stood.

For a moment Elena prepared to intervene.

Sofia did not leave.

She walked toward the window, breathing.

Vanessa waited.

Finally Sofia turned.

"You want forgiveness?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"Good."

"I wanted you to know I no longer believe you caused any of this."

Sofia laughed bitterly.

"You needed a year to discover that?"

"No. I needed a year to stop saying I knew it while still secretly blaming everyone."

That answer felt different.

Sofia sat again.

Vanessa looked at the bracelet.

"I don't deserve to ask, but is Emma happy?"

"Mostly."

"Does she talk about me?"

"Sometimes."

Vanessa swallowed.

"What does she say?"

Sofia looked at her.

"That's between Emma, Daniel and her therapist."

Vanessa nodded.

Boundary accepted.

Sofia continued.

"Listen carefully. If Emma chooses a relationship with you someday, that relationship belongs to her too."

"I understand."

"No. Understand this specifically. You don't get to use gifts, tears, money or guilt to make her comfort you."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"I won't."

"Don't promise."

Sofia leaned forward.

"Practice."

Vanessa nodded.

The meeting ended without a hug.

Without friendship.

Without forgiveness.

But something resolved.

Sofia no longer felt Vanessa's apology hanging over her like another obligation.

Vanessa had apologized.

Sofia had heard it.

She owed nothing in return.

Outside the office, Elena asked, "Worth it?"

Sofia thought.

"Yes."

"Forgive her?"

"No."

Elena smiled.

"Also valid."

Vanessa returned to therapy.

She told Leah everything.

"What did you hope Sofia would say?" Leah asked.

"That she understood."

"Did she?"

"No."

"How does that feel?"

"Fair."

Leah nodded.

"That may be one of the healthiest answers you've given me."

Meanwhile Daniel prepared Lavender House's opening gift.

He wanted something practical.

Not extravagant.

He called Sofia.

"What does the center actually need?"

"Daniel."

"I'm asking. Not buying the building."

She laughed.

"Books."

"What kind?"

"Board books. Picture books. Diverse families. Feelings. Sharing. Safety."

"Budget?"

"Normal-person budget."

"Define normal."

"That question is why I specified it."

Daniel bought forty children's books.

Nothing more.

Emma helped wrap them.

She chose lavender ribbon.

Daniel stared at the ribbon.

"You sure?"

Emma nodded.

"Purple."

He smiled.

"Purple it is."

May you like

For once, a lavender ribbon carried no fear.

Only anticipation.
