Chapter 12 - The Escape PlanRebecca spent two days tracing the Manhattan property.

The arrangement was complicated but not mysterious.

Vanessa had negotiated an option through a broker using funds from VGM.

The proposed trust would have held the townhouse with Emma as future beneficiary.

Daniel sat across from Rebecca.

"So Vanessa planned to leave me?"

"Possibly."

"And take Emma?"

"That seems plausible, but the documents alone don't prove a custody plan."

"Why put Emma's name there?"

"Estate planning. Or leverage. Or genuine concern for her future."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Genuine concern."

Rebecca did not respond.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"If she wanted Emma with her, why push her into a pool?"

"People can be possessive and harmful at the same time."

He looked away.

Later, Melissa Grant explained something similar.

"Do not assume abuse requires hatred. A parent can feel attachment, entitlement, jealousy and resentment simultaneously."

Daniel hated the word abuse.

Not because it was inaccurate.

Because it described his family.

Vanessa eventually admitted the townhouse plan during a proffer session with investigators.

Her intention had been to build financial independence.

If her marriage deteriorated, she wanted a residence Daniel did not control.

Emma's beneficiary status reflected Vanessa's belief that she would remain Emma's primary parent.

Claire asked why she believed that.

Vanessa replied, "Mothers usually keep the children."

Claire corrected her.

"Courts decide based on facts and best interests, not slogans."

The answer disturbed Vanessa.

Her private assumptions had always been simple.

Daniel owned the company.

Vanessa controlled the home.

Emma belonged with her.

Sofia was an employee.

Adrian was an ally.

None of those assumptions survived contact with reality.

Meanwhile, Nathan recovered additional deleted texts between Vanessa and Adrian.

One from a month before Halloween read:

Sofia saw Beacon paperwork. She knows 7.4 figure.

Adrian replied:

Then restrict her access. You don't need drama.

Vanessa:

She is everywhere because Emma demands her.

Adrian:

Fire her.

Vanessa:

Daniel won't allow it without cause.

Adrian:

Then document performance issues.

Vanessa had followed that advice.

She created notes claiming Sofia arrived late.

Missed instructions.

Misplaced jewelry.

Failed to supervise Emma.

Most allegations were exaggerated.

Several were demonstrably false.

Daniel read the file in disgust.

"She was building a record."

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

"Before Halloween."

"Six weeks before."

"And the bracelet?"

"Likely part of it."

Helen provided a statement about finding the bracelet.

Thomas documented Vanessa's camera questions.

Sofia described overhearing Bellmont conversations.

The pieces aligned.

Vanessa had been preparing to remove Sofia.

Then Halloween provided a more dramatic opportunity.

But investigators still needed to distinguish Vanessa's financial misconduct from Adrian's.

Marcus Vale became crucial.

He produced Bellmont internal spreadsheets.

One column listed "relationship costs."

VGM appeared.

A second listed "client facilitation."

Payments to Vanessa were tracked.

Marcus explained, "Adrian called them alignment fees."

Rebecca frowned.

"What did that mean?"

"Money to keep Vanessa cooperative."

"Kickbacks?"

"That's how I interpreted it."

Marcus had challenged the payments.

Adrian told him Whitmore knew.

Marcus asked for proof.

None appeared.

He resigned.

The company investigation broadened.

Law enforcement became formally involved in the suspected fraud.

Daniel cooperated.

He also voluntarily acknowledged weaknesses in Whitmore's internal controls.

One board member urged him not to admit too much.

"You're exposing yourself."

Daniel answered, "I'm exposing what needs fixing."

The board member frowned.

"You don't have to take responsibility for crimes committed against the company."

"No. But I have to take responsibility for a system where my password could move hundreds of thousands of dollars."

That attitude began restoring trust internally.

Sofia's life moved in another direction.

She visited a commercial space in Worcester with Elena.

The former tutoring center had two classrooms, a fenced backyard and terrible wallpaper.

Sofia stood in the middle of it.

"I love it."

Elena laughed.

"You're looking at the same peeling walls I am?"

"I can see what it could be."

The landlord quoted rent.

Sofia's optimism weakened.

Then Elena reminded her, "Your legal claim may resolve. You also have savings. There are small-business programs."

Sofia shook her head.

"I don't want to count on settlement money."

"Then don't. Build a plan that survives without it."

Sofia smiled.

That sounded right.

That evening, Emma gave Sofia a drawing.

Three figures.

A blue rectangle.

A purple shape.

"What's this?" Sofia asked.

"Present."

Sofia looked closer.

The lavender ribbon.

Emma remembered.

"Mommy no want."

Sofia's chest tightened.

She chose her words carefully.

"Your gift was beautiful."

Emma looked at her.

"You want?"

Sofia smiled through tears.

"I would treasure anything you made."

Emma hugged her.

Across the room, Daniel watched.

He finally understood why Vanessa's jealousy had been so destructive.

Love was not a limited resource.

May you like

Emma's affection for Sofia had never stolen anything from Vanessa.

Vanessa had destroyed her own place in Emma's trust by treating love like a competition.
