Chapter 2 - The Woman Nobody AskedSofia's cheek still burned when Helen guided her through the service entrance.

Behind them, the party had collapsed into whispers.
The jazz trio had stopped playing. Several guests had begun leaving early. Others pretended to examine decorations while watching Sofia disappear inside.
No one had asked her what happened.
That hurt almost as much as Daniel's slap.
Helen led her to the staff room and wet a cloth with cold water.
"Sit."
Sofia lowered herself into a chair.
When the cloth touched her cheek, she flinched.
Helen's face hardened.
"He had no right."
"He thought I hurt Emma."
"He still had no right."
Sofia stared at the floor.
"I tried to explain."
"I know."
"You didn't see what happened, did you?"
Helen shook her head.
"I was in the kitchen."
Sofia closed her eyes.
"I heard the splash. I turned around and Emma was in the water."
"And Vanessa?"
"Sitting there."
"Frozen?"
Sofia looked up.
"She laughed."
Helen stopped breathing for a moment.
"What?"
"Emma was crying, and Vanessa laughed."
A silence fell between them.
Helen had worked for the Whitmore family since Daniel was a teenager. She had known Vanessa for seven years.
Vanessa was rarely openly cruel.
Her cruelty lived in smaller things.
A correction spoken quietly enough that guests could not hear.
A smile that vanished as soon as people turned away.
A compliment that felt like a warning.
But laughing while Emma struggled in water was different.
"Did Emma say anything?" Helen asked.
"She called for her mother."
Helen looked toward the ceiling as though she could see through it to the nursery above.
Upstairs, Daniel stood beside Emma while Dr. Arthur Collins examined her.
The family physician checked her breathing, responsiveness and vital signs.
Emma had been changed into dry pajamas. Her damp strawberry-blonde hair stuck against her forehead.
"She's alert," Dr. Collins said, "but because she's only two and had a water incident, I want close observation."
Daniel nodded.
"Hospital?"
"I would not discourage emergency evaluation given her age."
"We're going."
Vanessa turned from the window.
"Daniel, she's exhausted."
"Exactly."
"The emergency room will terrify her."
Daniel stared at his wife.
"She fell into a pool."
Vanessa stopped arguing.
After the hospital evaluation confirmed Emma was stable, they returned home.
That evening, Emma lay beneath a blanket holding her stuffed rabbit.
Daniel sat beside her.
"Sweetheart?"
Emma looked at him.
"Can Daddy ask what happened?"
"Water."
"I know."
Emma pressed the rabbit against her chest.
"Did you fall?"
She hesitated.
Then whispered, "Mommy push."
Daniel's body went still.
Across the room, Vanessa's face changed.
"What did you say?" Daniel asked.
Emma looked toward Vanessa and immediately turned back.
"Mommy push Emma."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Daniel, she's two."
He stared at her.
"She says you pushed her."
"I tried to catch her."
"You touched her?"
"She stepped backward. I reached for her."
"Then why would she remember a push?"
"Because she felt my hand."
The explanation was possible.
Daniel desperately wanted it to be true.
Then he remembered Sofia.
"Sofia says she pulled Emma out."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Of course she says that."
"What does that mean?"
"She is protecting herself."
"From what?"
"Negligence."
Daniel frowned.
"She was holding Emma when I came outside."
"Exactly."
Daniel looked down at his hand.
"I shouldn't have hit her."
Vanessa softened.
"You were terrified."
"That's not an excuse."
"No, but it's human."
Daniel did not answer.
Downstairs, Sofia stood in the laundry room after refusing to leave until she knew Emma was safe.
Helen entered carrying the pale gift box.
"I found this beside the pool."
Sofia took it.
The cardboard was damp, the lavender ribbon loose.
Inside, the handmade bracelet had survived.
Sofia touched one purple bead.
"She worked so hard."
Helen sat beside her.
"Keep it."
"Why?"
Helen hesitated.
"Because tomorrow people may start remembering today differently."
Sofia looked at her.
Helen continued.
"A few weeks ago, Vanessa lost her diamond bracelet."
"I remember."
"She implied you might have been near it."
Sofia's eyes narrowed.
"I was putting laundry away."
"I know."
"Did she find it?"
Helen nodded.
"Where?"
"In her own dressing room."
Sofia stared.
"Why didn't she tell everyone?"
"She said she didn't want to embarrass the household."
"But she allowed them to suspect me."
Helen did not respond.
She did not need to.
That evening Vanessa entered the staff corridor.
She found Sofia near the kitchen.
"You should go home."
"I wanted to know Emma was safe."
"She is."
Sofia nodded.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Daniel is upset."
"So am I."
"You should be grateful he hasn't reported your negligence."
Sofia stared at her.
"My negligence?"
"Emma went into a pool while you were working."
"I was serving guests."
"People won't care about technical distinctions."
Sofia understood.
"You're going to blame me."
"I'm protecting my family."
"From me?"
"From scandal."
Sofia's anger rose.
"Emma almost drowned."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"And you should think carefully before making accusations you cannot prove."
Sofia lowered her voice.
"Emma says you pushed her."
Vanessa's composure cracked for a fraction of a second.
Then she recovered.
"Emma is two."
"She was there."
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
"Take tomorrow off."
"Am I fired?"
"Not yet."
She walked away.
Sofia remained still.
Upstairs, Vanessa locked herself in the bedroom and took out her phone.
She selected a contact saved as A.B.
A man answered.
"You shouldn't call tonight."
Vanessa looked toward the door.
"We have a problem."
"What kind?"
"The maid."
A pause.
Then Adrian Bell asked quietly, "What did she see?"
May you like
Vanessa looked toward the dark windows.
"Enough."
