Chapter 13 - Adrian Bell's Insurance PolicyAdrian Bell had prepared for betrayal.

That was what made him dangerous.

When investigators requested Bellmont records, his attorney produced organized files showing signed contracts, invoices and consultant reports.

On paper, the company looked legitimate.

Some work was legitimate.

That complexity mattered.

Adrian had never built a purely fake company.

He built a real one that could hide dishonest transactions among ordinary business.

Rebecca explained this to Daniel.

"Fraud is harder to prove when mixed with legitimate services."

"So he walks?"

"I didn't say that."

She displayed Marcus's emails.

"Intent matters. So does evidence showing he knew you had not approved the disputed transactions."

Daniel looked at one message.

D will not authorize revised structure. V says she can handle executive credentials.

"That seems clear."

"It's important."

Adrian's defense began taking shape.

He claimed Vanessa repeatedly represented that Daniel privately approved the strategy but wanted plausible deniability.

He claimed Bellmont believed Vanessa had authority within the family.

He claimed VGM payments were legitimate consulting compensation.

Some explanations were weak.

Others created enough complexity to require investigation.

Then Adrian activated his insurance policy.

He released a copy of Daniel's preliminary memorandum to investigators.

Daniel's signature appeared prominently.

News of the dispute leaked to a business publication.

The headline was cautious:

WHITMORE DEVELOPMENT REVIEWS CONSULTING PAYMENTS AMID INTERNAL AUTHORIZATION DISPUTE

Daniel read it at breakfast.

He felt sick.

Laura called.

"Lenders are asking questions."

"Tell them we're cooperating."

"Investors too."

"Same answer."

Daniel's father had spent thirty years building the company's reputation.

Daniel feared losing it in thirty days.

Rebecca reminded him, "Do not litigate this in the press."

Daniel agreed.

Vanessa saw the article from her hotel.

For a moment she considered remaining silent.

Then she remembered Adrian grabbing her wrist.

Remembered his demand for the memorandum.

She called Claire.

"I want investigators to have the handwritten note."

"They already have the copy you provided."

"The original too."

Claire nodded.

Vanessa continued.

"And the voice memo."

Claire looked up.

"What voice memo?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"Adrian didn't know I recorded one of our meetings."

Claire stared.

"When?"

"Last February."

"What does it contain?"

"Adrian explaining how Daniel's preliminary authorization could be stretched."

Claire's face became serious.

"Why haven't you mentioned this?"

"Because I was afraid it would incriminate me too."

"It probably will."

Vanessa looked down.

"But it may show the full context."

The recording was ugly for both of them.

Adrian's voice said:

"Daniel signed the preliminary review. If later approvals come through his account, no one asks questions unless the deal fails."

Vanessa replied:

"But he doesn't want Ashbridge."

Adrian:

"He doesn't want it now. Once the money moves and the properties perform, he may decide it was smarter than he thought."

Vanessa:

"And if he doesn't?"

Adrian:

"Then you tell him you were protecting the family."

The recording did not make Vanessa innocent.

It showed her knowingly discussing unauthorized approvals.

But it demolished Adrian's claim that he believed Daniel had secretly authorized everything.

Rebecca heard about the recording through investigators.

She looked at Daniel.

"That may be pivotal."

Daniel's response was quiet.

"Good."

"You don't sound relieved."

"My wife recorded herself conspiring to misuse my company."

Rebecca paused.

"Fair."

The financial pressure increased.

The board scheduled an emergency meeting.

Some directors wanted Daniel to temporarily step aside.

Daniel surprised them.

"If an independent governance committee believes that protects the company, I'll do it."

Margaret Ellis, the longest-serving director, studied him.

"You'd step aside voluntarily?"

"I inherited this company from my father. That doesn't mean I own everyone else's livelihood."

The room changed.

They ultimately agreed Daniel would remain CEO but delegate certain transaction authority while the investigation continued.

It was embarrassing.

It was also responsible.

Sofia read the article online.

She immediately closed it.

Maria, her friend from Worcester, asked, "Aren't you curious?"

"No."

"You live in that house."

"That's why I'm tired of knowing everything."

Maria smiled.

They were touring the potential Lavender House location again.

Sofia measured a wall.

"Bookshelves here."

"You're really doing this."

"I think so."

"What about Emma?"

Sofia stopped.

That was the hardest question.

"I love her."

"Then?"

"I can't stay because I'm afraid to leave."

Maria nodded slowly.

"That's not love either."

Sofia knew she was right.

She could remain part of Emma's life without remaining trapped as the Whitmore maid.

That night Daniel called Sofia.

"Emma asked for you."

"I'll visit tomorrow."

"Thank you."

He hesitated.

"Sofia?"

"Yes?"

"I heard you're seriously considering the childcare center."

"Helen talks."

"She does."

"Don't offer to buy it."

Daniel laughed unexpectedly.

"I wasn't going to."

"You were."

"Maybe."

Sofia smiled.

Then Daniel became serious.

"I want you to know something. Whatever happens with the company, your settlement discussions won't be tied to your employment."

"Good."

"I don't want you thinking you have to stay to be treated fairly."

Sofia was quiet.

"That's the first thing you've said in weeks that makes me think you actually understand."

Daniel accepted the criticism.

After the call, he went to Emma's nursery.

She was asleep.

On her nightstand sat the damaged pale gift box.

Helen had found it in storage.

Daniel touched the lavender ribbon.

One year earlier, he would have considered it worthless cardboard.

Now it felt like evidence of everything he had failed to see.

May you like

And he made himself a promise.

Emma would never again have to be harmed before he listened.
