Chapter 7 - The Papers in the Locked DrawerThe next morning, Rebecca returned with Daniel's family-law attorney, Melissa Grant.

Melissa had spent twenty years handling high-conflict custody matters.

She did not care how wealthy Daniel was.

Her first question was simple.

"Is Emma safe right now?"

"Yes."

"Is Vanessa in the house?"

"No."

"Has Vanessa agreed not to return without coordination?"

"Her attorney says yes."

Melissa nodded.

"Then we document everything and seek appropriate temporary orders."

Daniel looked at the folder containing the video.

"Will she lose custody?"

Melissa did not offer certainty.

"Family courts focus on the child's best interests and safety. The video is serious. But do not treat this like a social-media verdict. We present evidence properly."

Daniel nodded.

The legal process felt frustratingly measured compared with his emotions.

But Emma needed measured adults.

Meanwhile Rebecca focused on Bellmont.

"Vanessa's departure gives us an opportunity to secure company-related documents stored here, but we have to respect ownership and legal boundaries."

Daniel remembered the locked dressing-room drawer.

"Helen found Vanessa's bracelet there."

Rebecca looked up.

"The one Vanessa implied Sofia might have stolen?"

"Yes."

"Is anything else in that drawer?"

"I don't know."

Vanessa's attorney was contacted.

After negotiation, both sides agreed to a supervised inventory of certain business records in shared areas and Vanessa's office, with disputed personal materials preserved rather than casually seized.

Claire Donnelly attended for Vanessa.

When the locked drawer was opened, the diamond bracelet sat exactly where Helen had described.

Sofia, who was not present, was immediately vindicated on that accusation.

But the jewelry was almost irrelevant compared with the documents beneath it.

Rebecca found drafts marked with Bellmont letterhead.

One proposed transferring management rights over several Whitmore properties into a newly created entity called Ashbridge Holdings.

Another contained options allowing Bellmont-associated investors to acquire minority interests at preset valuations.

Daniel read the numbers.

"These valuations are low."

Rebecca nodded.

"Very."

A downtown Boston building worth approximately twelve million dollars was listed at seven-point-four million.

A suburban retail center worth nearly nineteen million was listed at eleven.

"Why would Vanessa agree to this?"

Rebecca turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

D refuses. Need alternate authority. V must secure domestic position first.

Daniel stared.

"Domestic position?"

Claire said, "We cannot assume Vanessa wrote that."

Rebecca examined the handwriting.

"No. This appears to be Adrian's."

Another note was in Vanessa's hand.

Sofia overheard conversation in study. Need her out before signing.

Daniel stopped breathing.

"What?"

He read it again.

Sofia.

His housekeeper.

The woman Vanessa had tried to frame.

Rebecca continued carefully.

"Do you know what conversation this refers to?"

Daniel shook his head.

They called Sofia.

She arrived twenty minutes later.

Daniel showed her the note.

"Did you overhear something?"

Sofia frowned.

"Maybe."

"When?"

"A few weeks before Halloween."

"What happened?"

She thought back.

"I was cleaning outside the study. Vanessa was on the phone."

"With Adrian?"

"I didn't know who."

"What did she say?"

Sofia hesitated.

"Something about Daniel refusing to sign. She said, 'If he keeps blocking it, I need another way.'"

Daniel exchanged a look with Rebecca.

"Anything else?"

"I heard a man's voice through speakerphone once. He said something about moving assets before the year ended."

"Did Vanessa know you heard?"

Sofia nodded.

"She opened the door suddenly."

"What did she say?"

"She asked why I was listening."

"Were you?"

"No. I was vacuuming."

Sofia's expression changed as memories connected.

"The next week was when her bracelet disappeared."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa had apparently begun constructing a story about Sofia after realizing Sofia might have overheard financial conversations.

Rebecca asked, "Did you tell anyone what you heard?"

"Only Helen."

Daniel looked toward the documents.

Vanessa's jealousy had been real.

But Sofia might also have been dangerous to the financial scheme.

The Halloween incident now had two possible motives.

Personal resentment.

And strategic removal of a witness.

That afternoon, Rebecca's forensic accountants discovered Ashbridge Holdings had been formed four months earlier.

Its manager was not Adrian.

It was a Delaware entity called Northstar Capital Services.

Behind Northstar were several investors.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Adrian Bell.

Another name shocked Daniel more.

Vanessa Whitmore.

She owned a concealed beneficial interest through a trust established in Nevada.

Rebecca explained, "The structure isn't automatically illegal. The issue is whether company assets were being transferred through fraud or unauthorized approvals."

Daniel stared at his wife's name.

"What would Vanessa gain?"

"Potentially millions if the properties were transferred below market and later sold or refinanced."

"How much?"

"Too early to say."

Daniel looked at Sofia.

Vanessa had accused a maid of wanting money.

Meanwhile she had been positioning herself for wealth Daniel did not know existed.

That evening, Adrian met Vanessa in a quiet hotel conference room.

He placed a folder on the table.

"You kept copies."

"So did you."

Vanessa glared.

"What happens if Daniel finds Ashbridge?"

"He probably already has."

Her face paled.

Adrian leaned back.

"You need to decide whether you are protecting yourself or protecting me."

"You promised we'd both be safe."

"I promised nothing."

Vanessa stared at him.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying if investigators ask, you initiated the unauthorized access."

"You told me how."

"And you chose to do it."

"You built Ashbridge."

"You signed the beneficial ownership documents."

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

Adrian smiled without warmth.

For the first time she understood something Daniel would soon learn too.

May you like

Adrian had designed the arrangement so that when it collapsed, Vanessa would look like the greedy wife who acted alone.

And he had kept records proving just enough to sacrifice her.
