Chapter 4 - Eight Weeks of SilenceVanessa summoned Sofia to her dressing room the next morning.

The room was larger than Sofia's apartment.
Cream wardrobes reached the ceiling. Designer shoes stood behind glass. Jewelry lay arranged in velvet compartments beneath soft lighting.
Vanessa stood beside the central island holding a folder.
"Sit."
"I'd rather stand."
Vanessa smiled without warmth.
"I'm offering you eight weeks of salary if you resign today."
Sofia stared.
"No."
"You haven't heard the terms."
"I don't need to."
"Don't be foolish."
"Yesterday your husband hit me because he thought I hurt Emma. Today you want to pay me to disappear."
Vanessa closed the folder.
"This isn't personal."
"It couldn't be more personal."
"You've become too involved with my daughter."
"Emma is two."
"Exactly. She needs boundaries."
Sofia's anger surfaced.
"She needed someone to pull her out of the pool."
Vanessa's eyes changed.
"Be careful."
"Why?"
"You keep implying something you did not witness."
"I witnessed you sitting there."
"That proves nothing."
"I witnessed you laughing."
Vanessa's hand tightened around the folder.
Sofia saw it.
"I don't know what happened before I turned around," Sofia continued, "but Emma knows."
"Emma is a toddler."
"She says you pushed her."
Vanessa slammed the folder down.
"My daughter repeats whatever adults encourage."
"I haven't encouraged anything."
"You have spent years encouraging dependence."
Sofia stared.
Vanessa moved closer.
"She calls for you when she's frightened. She wants you when she's tired. She reaches for you in front of me."
"That isn't my fault."
"You enjoy it."
Sofia felt genuinely shocked.
"You think I enjoy seeing a child afraid of her own mother?"
Vanessa's face went pale.
"Get out."
"Am I fired?"
"You should resign."
"That's not what I asked."
Vanessa opened the door.
"Leave."
Sofia stepped into the hallway.
Before walking away, she said, "Whatever happened at the pool, Emma remembers."
Vanessa shut the door.
Downstairs, Sofia found Helen in the kitchen.
"She offered me eight weeks."
"To leave?"
Sofia nodded.
Helen lowered her voice.
"Don't sign anything."
"I wasn't going to."
Helen glanced toward the hall.
"There may be another way to prove what happened."
Sofia looked up.
"The pool camera."
Sofia remembered it immediately.
A small black device under the terrace roof.
"Was it recording?"
"I don't know. Thomas might."
They found maintenance supervisor Thomas Reed near the garage.
When Sofia asked about the camera, he became cautious.
"The network connection has been unreliable."
"So no footage?"
"I didn't say that. It has local storage."
Helen leaned forward.
"There might be video?"
"Possibly."
Sofia felt hope.
Then Thomas added, "Mrs. Whitmore asked me about it this morning."
"What did she ask?"
"Whether old recordings could be cleared during maintenance."
Sofia's hope turned to alarm.
"Did you delete anything?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because a child was involved in an incident. Deleting footage would be irresponsible."
Sofia exhaled.
Thomas looked at her.
"I think Daniel should know."
"He does," Helen said. "He's coming home."
Daniel arrived forty minutes later.
He asked Sofia to speak privately in the staff sitting room.
For several seconds neither knew how to begin.
Finally Daniel said, "What I did was wrong."
Sofia's reply was immediate.
"Yes."
He looked surprised, then nodded.
"I was terrified."
"That explains your fear. It doesn't excuse hitting me."
"No."
"You didn't ask."
"I know."
"I had your daughter in my arms because I pulled her out of the water."
Daniel looked down.
"I understand."
"No. You understand now."
He met her eyes.
Sofia's voice shook.
"Emma watched you hit me. She was already crying. You made her watch the person who rescued her get punished."
The words struck him hard.
"I'm sorry."
Sofia nodded slowly.
"Thank you for saying it."
"I don't expect that to fix anything."
"It doesn't."
Daniel accepted that.
Then he said, "Thomas told me there may be video."
Sofia's expression changed.
"Will you look?"
"Yes."
"Even if it shows your wife?"
Daniel thought about Emma whispering Mommy push.
"Especially if it shows my wife."
Upstairs, Vanessa overheard Thomas's name.
She called Adrian immediately.
"Daniel knows about the camera."
"Can you access it?"
"You have credentials."
"I had temporary credentials."
"Use them."
"For what?"
"Delete the footage."
Adrian went silent.
Then: "No."
Vanessa stared at the phone.
"What?"
"I'm involved in questionable financial transactions, Vanessa. I'm not adding destruction of evidence involving a child."
"You were willing to access our system before."
"For a security cost review."
"You said you'd protect me."
"I said we'd protect our financial arrangement."
Her voice dropped.
"If that footage survives, Daniel will destroy me."
Adrian answered coldly, "Then perhaps you shouldn't have pushed Emma."
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You told me Sofia had to go."
"I meant fire her."
"She wouldn't leave."
"That does not make this my responsibility."
He ended the call.
Vanessa stood alone.
For the first time, she understood Adrian would sacrifice her if necessary.
Downstairs, Daniel authorized Thomas to preserve the surveillance system.
Rebecca Shaw arranged for an independent forensic specialist to examine it.
Before Daniel left the room, Sofia stopped him.
"Mr. Whitmore."
He turned.
"If the video proves what Emma said, don't make this about your marriage."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Make it about Emma."
Sofia's voice was quiet.
"Adults can lie to save themselves. She's two. She can't protect herself from any of us."
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Then nodded.
That evening, while Daniel waited for the technician to arrive, Vanessa sat alone in her bedroom.
She opened a locked drawer.
Inside lay several Bellmont documents.
A proposed property restructuring.
Copies of corporate approvals.
A handwritten note from Adrian.
And beneath them, her supposedly missing diamond bracelet.
She stared at it.
The bracelet had been useful.
It had shown her how easily suspicion could be directed toward Sofia.
But now suspicion was no longer enough.
If the camera had recorded the pool, Vanessa needed something stronger.
May you like
She needed Daniel to believe that whatever he saw had a different explanation.
And she had only hours to invent one.
