Chapter 24 - The Empty Wall

Thomas restored the original photographs.
Not all of them.
One wall remained deliberately empty.
Sarah noticed.
“What goes there?”
“I'm not sure.”
The old photograph of Thomas and David opening the first restaurant hung beside the kitchen entrance.
Under it, a small plaque read:
IMPERIAL LOTUS — FOUNDED 2004
DAVID TRAN — CULINARY FOUNDER
THOMAS WALKER — FOUNDING INVESTOR & PARTNER
No rewriting.
No revenge history.
David's name remained first where food was concerned.
Thomas’s role was visible too.
Truth did not require one man to disappear for the other to matter.
Then Thomas received a letter.
From David.
Inside was the original key to the first restaurant.
Brass.
Worn smooth.
David had kept it for twenty-two years.
A note:
You gave me money when nobody believed in me.
I turned that trust into permission to believe I could erase you.
I cannot give you back the years I rewrote.
I can give back the first thing we ever shared.
The door.
Thomas sat alone for a long time.
Sarah found him.
He handed her the letter.
“Are you going to forgive him?”
Thomas looked through the restaurant windows.
“I think I already started.”
“Will you ever trust him again?”
“Not the same way.”
Sarah nodded.
“That might be healthier.”
Thomas smiled.
“Definitely cheaper.”
She laughed.
Then Thomas finally knew what belonged on the empty wall.
Not another photograph.
The old brass key.
Placed inside a glass case.
Beneath it:
