Chapter 12 - The Restaurant That Almost Failed

In 2009, Imperial Lotus nearly collapsed.
The financial crisis destroyed spending.
Reservations fell forty percent.
Thomas secretly mortgaged a commercial property to keep payroll running.
David never knew.
Thomas had wanted to protect him.
Now Evelyn found the records.
Amount:
$1.8 million.
Thomas looked at the old documents.
He remembered Sarah asking if he was insane.
He remembered telling her:
“David would do the same for me.”
Would he?
Maybe once.
Thomas showed David.
David sat silently for several minutes.
“You never told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“You were already sleeping four hours a night.”
David looked at the mortgage.
“You risked your building.”
“Yes.”
“For the restaurants.”
“Yes.”
David’s face crumpled slightly.
“All these years I thought…”
“What?”
“That when things got bad, I saved us.”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“You did.”
“No.”
“You kept customers coming. I kept cash moving. Both are true.”
David looked away.
The story he had told himself—Thomas the passive rich investor, David the true builder—was collapsing.
