Chapter 9 - Kendrick Talks to PoliceKendrick admitted cutting Maisie’s hair.
Her explanation:
Maisie had gotten paint and craft glue in it.
“What happened after she asked you to stop?”
“I was trying to make it even.”
“Why place the scissors in her hand?”
Kendrick paused.
“I panicked.”
“Why tell her to say she cut it?”
Another silence.
“I knew her father would overreact.”
There.
Not protecting Maisie.
Protecting herself.
Then the reports.
Kendrick claimed she had been catching up on household records.
“Five reports in one day?”
“Yes.”
“Some allegedly seven months old?”
“Yes.”
“Why do old notes from other staff contradict them?”
“People see children differently.”
Then investigators produced the draft complaint against Declan.
Kendrick’s attorney requested a break.
Her explanation grew weaker.
Finally she admitted she believed Declan’s objections to the land purchase had become personal.
Investigators responded:

“They became personal after you involved his daughter.”
Kendrick said nothing.
